Little Rock Zoo begins major expansion project that will introduce new animal exhibits and interactive family experiences

Little Rock, Arkansas – Big changes are underway at the Little Rock Zoo as construction officially begins on a major expansion project aimed at transforming the zoo experience for families across Arkansas.

On Tuesday, zoo officials and city leaders gathered for a groundbreaking ceremony to kick off the long-anticipated improvements. The expansion will introduce several new animal exhibits, upgrade existing structures, and add more hands-on experiences for children and families.

Zookeeper Jessica Landrum said the updates have been a long time coming and will make a noticeable difference for both animals and guests.

“There will be a new capybara exhibit. A new anteater exhibit. Tortoises are probably going to move up here. And some of the other buildings around this area will get an update,” Landrum said.

The upcoming changes are part of a larger effort to modernize the zoo, enhance visitor engagement, and make learning about animals more immersive and enjoyable. While heavy equipment and construction fences might temporarily alter the typical zoo atmosphere, visitors like Peyton Woodruff are looking forward to what’s ahead.

“My kids are weirdly obsessed with Komodo dragons. And they’re making a bigger part of that too, in the reptile house. So, they’ve been so excited,” Woodruff shared.

A key feature of the project will focus on adding interactive elements, such as the opportunity to feed tortoises — a simple yet memorable activity for children that deepens their connection with wildlife.

“I think that’s great. The more you guys can make it more kid-friendly. I think, bring it on,” said zoo visitor Kerwyn Fells, applauding the zoo’s plans to get kids more involved.

The expansion is projected to be completed within the next 14 to 16 months, and once finished, the upgraded zoo will offer visitors a richer, more dynamic experience. While some areas may be under construction during this time, the zoo will remain open to the public, with many popular exhibits still accessible.

With new habitats, improved visitor spaces, and more opportunities for kids to get up close with animals, the Little Rock Zoo hopes this expansion will inspire future generations of wildlife lovers and conservationists.

The zoo encourages families to continue visiting during the renovation period to witness the transformation unfold — and to be part of a new chapter in Little Rock’s growing commitment to education, nature, and family fun.
