Conway, Arkansas – As a heat wave continues to grip Arkansas, the City of Conway has opened two cooling centers to provide relief for residents. The extreme heat, with heat indexes soaring up to 110 degrees, is expected to last through Friday evening. In response, city officials have taken action to ensure the safety and well-being of the community.
The cooling centers will be available to residents from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Saturday and from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Sundays. One of the cooling centers is located at the Don Owens Sports Center at 10 Lower Ridge Rd., while the second center is at the McGee Center, located at 3800 College Ave. These locations are open to anyone in need of a safe, cool place during the extreme heat.
With the dangerous heat wave affecting many parts of the state, the Arkansas Storm Team has warned that the heat index could reach as high as 110 degrees, making it crucial for people to take precautions. Local authorities are urging residents to avoid prolonged exposure to the heat and to seek shelter in air-conditioned spaces whenever possible.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) also recommend staying hydrated, wearing light clothing, and checking on vulnerable individuals, especially senior citizens or those with underlying health conditions, who are particularly at risk in extreme heat. Information on how to respond to excessive heat, including the importance of staying cool and hydrated, can be found on the Ready.gov website.
The opening of these cooling centers offers much-needed relief to Conway residents during this period of extreme temperatures. Whether it’s to escape the heat for a few hours or to find a safe space to rest, these centers are a crucial resource for the community in the face of dangerously high temperatures.
