The University of Central Arkansas in Conway prepares for enrollment boom with additional housing

Conway, Arkansas – The University of Central Arkansas (UCA) faces an enjoyable challenge as schools and universities all around the country get ready for the return of students this fall: a notable rise in enrollment calls for more student housing.

Rising numbers have prompted UCA to provide over 100 extra bedrooms at The Edge, an apartment building located across the street from the university. This strategy aims to handle the projected student influx this semester. The extra housing coincides with a period of significant university interest, especially among incoming freshmen.

UCA President Houston Davis expressed enthusiasm about the university’s growing student body.

“Our overall applications for new housing are running seven and a half percent of where we were. And if you just isolate on freshmen that have their deposits in and have registered for classes, we’re up almost 23% compared to this time last year,” said Houston Davis, UCA President, to THV11.

The Edge is not new; the relationship with them was first developed almost five years ago during renovations of various on-campus living halls.

“Now it’s for a delightful reason, and that’s the enrollment growth. But either way, it’s good to have a partner to be able to deliver the services and the quality that we want to deliver,” he added.

The UCA Commitment program is primarily to blame for the increase in freshmen enrollment. This program seeks to guarantee that future students may afford their education free from the burden of debt.

“The whole goal with UCA Commitment is to make certain that students know if we are the right fit for them, that they can come to UCA and avoid having to take on debt to be able to take care of their tuition and fees,” he explained.

Though off-campus, The Edge is meant to give a campus-like feel. Davis underlined the university’s initiatives to fully include these facilities into student life.

“We want to have programming. We want to make certain that we’re running shuttles. We want students to feel like that apartment setup is just like the other apartment-style housing that we have on campus,” Davis said.

Although for now it is still an issue for future debate, with the present trajectory of enrollment increase the prospect of building more on-campus housing is on table.

With move-in day set for Sunday, August 18, 2024, UCA looks forward to greeting its students—new and returning—as the preparations for the new academic year proceed. This increase in housing capacity shows UCA’s dedication to fit its rising student population while preserving the quality and community feeling that define the UCA experience.
