North Little Rock, Arkansas – After more than three decades in law enforcement, North Little Rock Police Chief Patrick Thessing has announced his retirement, marking the end of a 31-year career dedicated to serving the city and its residents.

The announcement came on Wednesday, June 17, 2026, when Thessing formally submitted his retirement letter to Mayor Terry Hartwick. In his letter, he said his decision was driven by a desire to step back from public service and spend more time with his family after years of long shifts, leadership responsibilities, and steady change within the department.

Thessing has served the North Little Rock Police Department (NLRPD) in multiple roles over the years, eventually being appointed police chief in January 2021. His tenure as chief came during a period of modernization and organizational growth, with a strong focus on improving technology and strengthening public safety infrastructure.

Under his leadership, the department launched several major initiatives that reshaped how officers operate and respond to incidents. Among the most notable developments was the implementation of a Real-Time Crime Center, a system designed to improve situational awareness and support faster decision-making during emergencies. The department also expanded its use of technology in day-to-day policing and helped establish the Joint Police Academy, aimed at improving training and collaboration among officers.

These changes reflected a broader effort to modernize policing strategies while maintaining a strong connection to the community. City officials and department members have often pointed to these improvements as key steps in adapting to evolving public safety needs.

In his retirement statement, Thessing reflected on his career with a focus on humility, service, and the people he worked alongside throughout the years.

“Titles mean nothing, but humility and striving to always serve others while putting yourself last will carry you far. I leave knowing the agency is strong, and more importantly, that it is filled with amazing people who are committed to their calling. Thank you for allowing me to be part of this team for so many years. It has truly been the honor of my life to serve alongside you,” said Thessing.

The message highlighted not only his personal philosophy but also his confidence in the department’s future as he prepares to step away from his leadership role.

City officials have not yet announced who will succeed Thessing as chief, but his departure marks a significant transition for the North Little Rock Police Department. His final day on the job is scheduled for June 30, 2026, giving the department a short window to prepare for leadership changes.

As word of his retirement spreads, many within the department and the community are reflecting on the long arc of his career. Over 31 years, Thessing witnessed major shifts in policing, technology, and community expectations, all while rising through the ranks to lead the agency at a critical time.

While his retirement closes a long chapter in North Little Rock law enforcement, officials say the systems and initiatives put in place during his tenure will continue shaping the department moving forward. For many colleagues, his departure is both a moment of appreciation and a turning point for what comes next.

As June 30 approaches, the city prepares to say goodbye to a chief whose career was defined by steady service, institutional change, and a focus on building a stronger, more connected police department.
