Little Rock Police officer arrested and charged with DWI and reckless driving after weekend traffic stop

Little Rock, Arkansas – A Little Rock Police Department officer was arrested over the weekend and charged with driving while intoxicated (DWI) and reckless driving, officials confirmed. The incident occurred on October 4 when Officer Sydney Lewis, who was off-duty at the time, was stopped by authorities while driving along a local interstate.

According to reports, Lewis was initially pulled over for speeding, and during the traffic stop, she failed a field sobriety test. Following the failed test, she was formally arrested for DWI and reckless driving. Officer Lewis has since been taken into custody at the Pulaski County Regional Jail, where she was formally charged with the offenses.

Lewis, who joined the Little Rock Police Department in February 2024, has been placed on administrative leave while an internal investigation is conducted. The administrative investigation will determine any additional disciplinary measures in accordance with LRPD policies and procedures.

“This type of behavior is taken very seriously by the department,” a spokesperson for LRPD said. While the officer involved is on leave, the department emphasized its commitment to upholding accountability and maintaining public trust.

The arrest highlights ongoing concerns about off-duty conduct by law enforcement personnel, particularly when it involves potential threats to public safety. The LRPD has assured residents that the case will be handled according to both legal and departmental protocols, ensuring a thorough review of the incident.

The charges of DWI and reckless driving carry significant legal consequences under Arkansas law, including potential fines, license suspension, and other penalties. Authorities have not released additional details about the traffic stop, including whether any other vehicles or individuals were involved in the incident.

Officer Lewis’s case is pending, and she is expected to appear in court in the coming weeks. Meanwhile, the LRPD continues its administrative review to determine the next steps regarding her status within the department.

Residents are reminded of the importance of safe driving and the serious consequences that can result from operating a vehicle while under the influence, regardless of occupation. The department’s swift response and the ongoing investigation reflect a commitment to accountability and public safety in Little Rock.

This case serves as a reminder that law enforcement personnel are not exempt from laws governing the public, and the LRPD continues to monitor the situation closely while cooperating with local authorities.
