Conway, Arkansas – Conway is celebrating a significant milestone as its population has officially surpassed the 70,000-resident mark, further solidifying its position as one of the fastest-growing cities in the nation. According to the latest data from the U.S. Census Bureau, Conway’s growth rate has doubled the national median for cities with populations exceeding 50,000. From 2023 to 2024, the city saw a 1.70% increase, welcoming 1,100 new residents. This is significantly higher than the median growth rate of 0.79% for similarly sized cities.
“Reaching a population of 70,000 marks a significant milestone for Conway,” said Mayor Bart Castleberry. “Conway’s sustained growth is a reflection of our people, our shared vision, and the quality of life we offer.” This milestone is not just a number on a page but a testament to the city’s vibrant community and its consistent upward trajectory.
Since 2020, Conway has been on an impressive growth path, ranking 74th nationwide in terms of population expansion. The city’s population has increased by 9.87% over the past four years, adding more than 6,000 new residents. This rate of growth is 600% faster than cities with populations over 50,000. Conway’s impressive rise has made it the fastest-growing city in Arkansas for two consecutive years, in both 2022 and 2023.
Mayor Castleberry attributes much of the city’s growth to a surge in job opportunities. Recent announcements from major employers such as Clayton Conway, Central Cold Storage, and Westrock Coffee have played a significant role in attracting both residents and workers. “Recent job announcements from Clayton Conway, Central Cold Storage, and Westrock Coffee are contributing to a rate of job growth that is double the national average,” Castleberry noted. The city added more than 1,000 jobs last year, nearly matching the pace of its population growth.
As the city expands, local leaders have recognized the increasing demand for housing. In response to Conway’s rapid development, the Conway Area Chamber of Commerce commissioned a housing study in 2024, which highlighted the need for more than 900 homes in the next five years. The study also projected a shortage of 500 residential lots. “This study confirms what we have seen over the past several years — Conway is growing, and that growth brings opportunity and responsibility,” Castleberry said.
The housing shortage could present challenges for the city’s future, but Mayor Castleberry remains optimistic that Conway will continue to thrive. “Meeting the demand for housing isn’t just about new homes, it’s about making sure Conway remains a place families, businesses, and talent can thrive in the years ahead,” he explained. Ensuring that growth is sustainable and that Conway remains an attractive place to live will be critical to maintaining its momentum.
As Conway looks ahead to the future, it is clear that the city is positioned for even greater success. The population surge, coupled with an expanding job market, presents a unique opportunity for both residents and businesses. With careful planning and continued investment in housing, Conway is well on its way to becoming one of Arkansas’ most prosperous cities.
As the city celebrates its current growth, it is also preparing for the challenges that come with it. Conway’s ability to balance expansion with quality of life will determine whether it can sustain its position as one of the fastest-growing cities in the country for years to come. With strong leadership, a thriving economy, and a clear vision for the future, Conway is on track to continue its impressive rise.
