Helena-West Helena, Arkansas – Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders has appointed Joseph Whitfield as the new Mayor of Helena-West Helena, following the removal of former Mayor Christopher Franklin by court order on July 7, 2025. Whitfield will serve out the remainder of the current mayoral term and is eligible to run for a full term in the 2026 election.
“Helena-West Helena needs big ideas and bold solutions to correct some of the issues that have arisen in recent years, and I believe that a new face like Joseph Whitfield is what this city needs,” Governor Sanders said. “In my conversations with Joseph, he’s laid out a commonsense vision to get his community back on track and truly tap into Helena-West Helena’s potential. I’m grateful to him for stepping up to take this leadership role, and I am also thankful for the leadership of individuals like interim mayor Don Etherly, who has helped move the city in the right direction since taking over earlier this summer.”

A native of Helena, Whitfield grew up in the community and is the son of Sam and Linda Whitfield. He graduated from KIPP Delta Collegiate in 2011 before pursuing undergraduate studies at Colby College and later completing graduate work at Relay Graduate School of Education in New York. Whitfield has spent eight years in education, serving as both a teacher and assistant principal, where he developed a passion for leadership and personal development.
Most recently, Whitfield held dual executive director roles at Delta Magic and the Phillips County Chamber of Commerce. At Delta Magic, he worked to highlight positive stories from the Arkansas Delta, emphasizing community engagement and economic growth. In his role at the Chamber, he helped build coalitions across local businesses and organizations in Phillips County, focusing on strengthening regional collaboration and development initiatives.
