North Little Rock, Arkansas – Less than two weeks ago, some North Little Rock homeowners received a flier informing them that the NLR Planning Commission will shortly be voting on a potential slaughterhouse.
Homeowners like Talesha Dokes, who live less than five minutes away, are forming thoughts about the facility, which would be situated at 1600 Gregory.
“It will undoubtedly have an effect and a difference in the area,” Dokes stated.
Dokes claims that in order to inform neighbors to bring up their issues with the planning commission, she has been knocking on doors.
“We would like to preserve the value we do have, even though it’s not a high-value property area,” Dokes stated.
Over 2,000 cattle would be killed annually at the slaughterhouse, and the noise and stench of the animals could lower the value of nearby homes.
Some, like Michele Michalek, are viewing this as a victory, arguing that it might boost the economy and create more jobs.
In a recent social media post, Michalek said, “There are a lot of positives here, including the creation of jobs and hopefully the availability of more local meat.”
However, according to Dokes, she has done her homework and is aware that it will negatively affect the local population.
“Over time, the health issues that locals encounter in these areas can be extremely harmful to the residents,” Dokes stated.
On January 14, the Planning Commission will hold its final vote.
