Philander Smith University secures a $3.9 million grant from the Wingate Foundation to expand scholarships and strengthen long term student support programs

Little Rock, Arkansas – A major boost to student support is coming to Philander Smith University, as the school announced a multimillion-dollar grant aimed at expanding scholarships and strengthening long-term financial aid opportunities for students.

University officials confirmed that the institution has received a $3.9 million grant from the Windgate Foundation. The funding is designed to support both immediate student needs and long-term scholarship sustainability through an endowed fund.

According to the university, the grant is divided into two parts. A significant $3.75 million portion will establish the Philander Smith University Need-Based Scholarship Endowment, while an additional $150,000 bridge grant will provide immediate financial assistance to students as the endowment is created and put into operation.

The dual structure of the award means that students will begin seeing support in the short term, while also benefiting from a permanent funding source intended to grow over time. University leaders emphasized that this combination of immediate aid and long-term planning is key to expanding access to higher education.

“This extraordinary investment from the Windgate Foundation will strengthen affordability and help ensure that financial barriers do not hinder educational opportunity for generations of Philander Smith students,” Philander Smith President and CEO Maurice D. Gipson, Ph.D., said. “As we approach our 150th anniversary, we are deeply grateful to the Windgate Foundation for investing in the mission of our institution and the future of our scholars.”

The statement reflects both gratitude and long-term vision as the university prepares for a historic milestone. Founded nearly 150 years ago, Philander Smith University has long focused on providing educational access, particularly for students who face financial challenges.

Officials noted that the grant was approved by the Windgate Foundation’s board in April. As part of the award conditions, university trustees were asked to establish an endowed fund intended to “perpetuate their giving to the needs of the organization long beyond their lifetime.” The wording underscores the foundation’s goal of ensuring that support continues for future generations rather than ending after a single funding cycle.

Endowments like this are a critical financial tool for many universities, allowing institutions to generate ongoing income from invested funds. For Philander Smith University, the new scholarship endowment is expected to increase stability in financial aid offerings and expand opportunities for students who might otherwise struggle to afford tuition and related expenses.

While the immediate bridge funding will assist current students, the larger endowment is positioned to influence admissions and access for years to come. University officials described the grant as a transformative step that strengthens both the mission and financial foundation of the institution.

The announcement also highlights growing philanthropic investment in higher education institutions that serve underrepresented and financially diverse student populations. In this case, the partnership between Philander Smith University and the Windgate Foundation represents a shared focus on expanding opportunity through education.

As the university approaches its 150th anniversary, leaders say the timing of this support is especially meaningful. It not only reinforces current scholarship efforts but also sets the stage for a more sustainable financial future.
