Newport, Arkansas – The grief sweeping through the community of Newport, Arkansas, grew heavier this week after the Newport Police Department confirmed the death of School Resource Officer Michael Long, a man remembered not only for his badge, but for the lasting impact he made on students and families across the city.

Long spent years serving the people of Jackson County and Newport with a quiet sense of duty that colleagues say defined his career. His journey in law enforcement began in 2014 with the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office, where he worked until 2022. After nearly eight years there, he transitioned into a new role with the Newport Police Department, becoming a school resource officer for Newport Public Schools.

For many students, Officer Long was a familiar face in school hallways — someone they could turn to for guidance, conversation or reassurance during difficult moments. His work extended beyond enforcing rules. Friends and coworkers say he built trust with young people and worked hard to create a safe and supportive environment inside the schools he served.

In a statement released following the announcement, the department described the profound effect Long had on the community.

“Officer Long was more than a law enforcement officer; he was a mentor, protector, friend and positive influence to countless young people throughout our community. His dedication, compassion and unwavering service will never be forgotten,” the department said.

The loss has resonated deeply throughout Newport Public Schools, where students, teachers and staff members interacted with Long on a daily basis. School resource officers often become woven into the fabric of school life, and those who knew him say his presence brought both comfort and stability.

Authorities did not release additional details surrounding his death, but the Newport Police Department asked residents to keep Long’s loved ones, fellow officers and the school community in their thoughts during this difficult time.

As tributes continue to emerge, many in Newport are remembering Officer Michael Long not simply as an officer in uniform, but as a compassionate figure who dedicated much of his life to protecting and encouraging the next generation.
