Little Rock, Arkansas – One of Hollywood’s most recognizable voices and faces is heading to Arkansas this summer as the Arkansas Cinema Society prepares for its annual Filmland event. This year’s edition brings a major spotlight to Little Rock, with Academy Award-winning actor Matthew McConaughey scheduled to appear on August 14.

The announcement has already generated strong interest among film fans and industry followers in the region. McConaughey will be honored with the Variety Legend & Groundbreaker Award during a special evening event hosted at the Arkansas Museum of Fine Arts (AMFA). The award recognizes artists who have made lasting contributions to film and have remained influential across decades of work.

McConaughey’s career spans more than 30 years, beginning with his breakout role in Dazed and Confused in 1993 and continuing through a wide range of performances in drama, comedy, and independent cinema. The award highlights both his longevity in the industry and his ability to evolve with changing film landscapes while maintaining a strong presence in major productions.

As part of the event, attendees will also get a first look at McConaughey’s latest film, The Rivals of Amziah King, directed by Andrew Patterson. The screening will take place at AMFA in Little Rock at 6:30 p.m. on Friday, August 14, followed by a live Q&A session with McConaughey himself.

The film tells the story of Amziah King, a charismatic and musically gifted man living in rural Oklahoma. In the narrative, Amziah leads a group of bluegrass-playing misfits while managing a local honey production business. The story takes a turn when his estranged foster daughter returns, seeking to reconnect and rebuild both family ties and a shared business future.

The film’s mix of music, rural setting, and emotional family dynamics adds a unique layer to McConaughey’s recent work, continuing his trend of choosing character-driven stories with strong cultural backdrops.

The post-screening discussion will be moderated by Jeff Nichols, co-founder of the Arkansas Cinema Society and an acclaimed filmmaker known for Mud and The Bikeriders. The conversation is expected to offer insights into both the making of the film and McConaughey’s broader career journey.

Filmland has become one of Arkansas’s most anticipated cultural events, drawing filmmakers, actors, and audiences from across the country. The inclusion of a major Hollywood figure like McConaughey further elevates the profile of this year’s program, reinforcing Little Rock’s growing role in the independent film scene.

Organizers say the event is designed not only to celebrate film but also to connect audiences with the creative process behind it. The Q&A session is expected to give attendees a rare opportunity to hear directly from McConaughey about his role in the film, his approach to storytelling, and his experiences working with emerging directors like Patterson.

Tickets for the August 14 screening will be released in phases. Sponsor presale access will begin at noon on Tuesday, June 23, and continue through noon CST Thursday, June 25. Member presale tickets will then be available from noon CST Thursday, June 25, through noon CST Friday, June 26. After that, tickets will open to the general public at noon on Friday, June 26.

Given McConaughey’s popularity and the limited capacity of the venue, organizers expect high demand for seats once public sales begin.

For the Arkansas Cinema Society, bringing a figure of McConaughey’s stature to Filmland reflects the event’s continued growth and ambition. What started as a regional celebration of cinema has steadily expanded into a nationally recognized platform for film discussion and premieres.

As August approaches, anticipation is building not just for the film screening, but for the broader cultural moment it represents—one that blends Hollywood recognition with Arkansas’s growing presence in the film world.
