Jonesboro Bark Park celebrates one year of bringing dogs and their owners together in the community

Jonesboro, Arkansas – One year after its grand opening, the Jonesboro Bark Park has quickly become a favorite gathering spot for both pets and their owners. The park, which opened on Aug. 13, 2024, sits along the Jonesboro connectivity trail on Parkview Street, just a short walk from Jonesboro High School.

For many local residents, the Bark Park has filled a unique gap — offering not just a safe space for dogs to run and play, but also a social hub for the people who love them. Jonesboro Parks and Recreation Director Danny Kapales says the project has more than lived up to expectations.

“Its been a great opportunity for the community to have a place to bring their dogs out, let the dogs socialize, but also let dog lovers socialize. So they have a chance to meet friends, make new friends,” Kapales said. “Just have a great open space, and it’s a spot that wasn’t being utilized for anything else. So, it’s a good green space for our community.”

Since its opening, the park has attracted a steady stream of visitors. Families with energetic puppies, retirees with small companion dogs, and even people without pets have been spotted enjoying the friendly atmosphere. Many say the park offers more than exercise — it builds connections.

The Bark Park’s location along the trail makes it easily accessible for walkers, joggers, and cyclists. Its open layout and shaded areas encourage longer visits, while its safe fencing and open grassy spaces allow dogs to roam freely under the watchful eyes of their owners.

City officials aren’t stopping with just one success story. Kapales revealed that the city is already exploring the possibility of adding more dog parks and playgrounds in other neighborhoods. This could give residents across Jonesboro the same opportunity to enjoy pet-friendly community spaces.

As the Bark Park celebrates its first anniversary, it’s clear the project has brought life to an area that once sat unused. And for many in Jonesboro, that’s reason enough to keep the tails wagging and the conversations flowing — one fetch at a time.
