Jefferson County, Arkansas – Authorities in Jefferson County are continuing a death investigation after a 27-year-old man was found unresponsive near a roadside fire earlier this month, in an incident that has raised multiple unanswered questions for investigators.
The situation began on June 15, 2026, at approximately 9:34 p.m., when a concerned citizen called 911 to report a vehicle on fire in the area of East Altheimer Road. While deputies were en route to the scene, emergency dispatchers received a second call reporting an unresponsive individual lying on the side of the road in the same general area.
When deputies arrived, they were joined by volunteer firefighters and Emergency Ambulance Services Inc. (EASI). First responders quickly began rendering aid to the individual, who was later identified as 27-year-old Kyonte Shakur Woods.
Officials say Woods had suffered a serious injury to the head. Based on initial observations at the scene, deputies believed the wound was consistent with a gunshot injury. Emergency personnel transported Woods to Jefferson Regional Medical Center in an effort to save his life, but he later died at the hospital.

As investigators began examining the scene, they determined that the burning vehicle reported earlier that night belonged to Woods. The discovery added another layer of complexity to the case, as authorities worked to piece together the sequence of events leading up to the fire and the fatal injury.
An autopsy was performed on June 16, 2026, at the Arkansas State Crime Lab. According to the findings, the official cause of death was determined to be a gunshot wound to the head. The ruling confirmed early suspicions from deputies at the scene, though many details surrounding the circumstances remain unclear.
Despite the autopsy results, investigators have emphasized that the case is still very much active. Officials have not released additional details about possible suspects, motives, or what may have led to the events on East Altheimer Road that night.
At this stage, law enforcement is focusing on gathering information from the public and reviewing any available evidence. Authorities are asking anyone who may have seen Woods or who is aware of his movements on the evening of June 15 to come forward.
The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office has provided a direct contact for tips related to the investigation. “Anyone with information about Woods’ activities and movements on the evening of June 15, 2026, is encouraged to contact Lieutenant Clayton Cantrell at (870) 510-0354 or by email at [email protected],” officials said in their public request for assistance.
Investigators have also stated that no additional information will be released at this time, citing the ongoing nature of the case. They noted that updates will be provided as soon as they become available and as the investigation allows.
The combination of a burning vehicle and a fatal gunshot wound has left many questions unanswered, and officials say determining what happened in the hours leading up to the 911 calls remains a priority.
For now, authorities continue to treat the case as an active death investigation, with multiple agencies involved in reviewing evidence and reconstructing the timeline of events. More information is expected as investigators progress and additional leads are developed.
