Hot Springs, Arkansas – A Hot Springs police sergeant and his wife were taken into custody Tuesday following an alleged altercation at their home that resulted in a call to local authorities. The Hot Springs Police Department confirmed that both 49-year-old Joey Williams, a longtime member of the department, and his 47-year-old wife, Julie Williams, were arrested after a reported fight.
Police said officers were dispatched to a local hospital after receiving a report of a battery. Upon arrival, Julie Williams told authorities that she had been involved in a confrontation with her husband at their residence, alleging that he had slapped her across the face. Joey Williams, according to the police report, admitted to slapping his wife but claimed that his actions were in response to being slapped by her first.
Joey Williams has been charged with third-degree domestic battery, a misdemeanor offense in Arkansas. Following the incident, the department placed Williams on administrative leave while the investigation continues. He has served with the Hot Springs Police Department since 2006.
The Hot Springs Police Department stated that the incident is being handled as a domestic dispute, and officials are conducting a thorough review of the circumstances surrounding the alleged altercation. “Domestic violence is taken very seriously, and our department follows all protocols to ensure safety and accountability,” said a spokesperson for the department.
While both parties were arrested, the department did not release details regarding Julie Williams’ legal status following the incident. Authorities have urged individuals involved in domestic disputes to seek help and reminded the community that support resources are available.
This incident highlights the challenges law enforcement faces in balancing professional responsibilities with personal matters. Local residents expressed surprise at the news, noting that domestic disputes involving police officers can attract significant public attention.
As investigations continue, the Hot Springs Police Department emphasized its commitment to transparency and proper handling of cases involving personnel. The department also reassured the public that officers’ conduct both on and off duty is subject to oversight and accountability measures.
The case remains under investigation, and authorities are encouraging anyone with additional information to contact the Hot Springs Police Department. Joey Williams’ administrative leave will remain in effect until the review is completed and further actions are determined.
