Paragould, Arkansas – Paragould will briefly take on a new role in Arkansas government next week when Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders brings her “Capital for a Day” program to the Northeast Arkansas city on August 12, 2026.
The designation will make Paragould the twenty-first community to serve as a temporary seat of state government under Sanders. During the visit, senior state government officials are expected to join the governor in the city and meet with local counterparts.
The program is designed to highlight communities throughout Arkansas while giving local officials an opportunity to connect directly with leaders from state government. For Paragould, the visit also offers a chance to showcase the city’s history, institutions and attractions.
Sanders formally named Paragould as the state’s “Capital for a Day” in a proclamation dated August 7, 2026. The document points to the city’s long connection to transportation, industry and public life in Northeast Arkansas.
Paragould’s story is closely tied to the railroads. The city was named after two competing railroad figures, James Paramore and Jay Gould, and developed on top of Crowley’s Ridge in what is now Greene County.

The arrival of two railroads in 1882 played a major role in the community’s early growth. The St. Louis and Iron Mountain Railroad and the Texas and St. Louis Railroad both pushed into Greene County, with the city eventually taking shape where their tracks crossed.
Paragould was incorporated in 1883 and quickly developed into an important trading center for the region. Its location helped support commerce, while the area’s abundant hardwood resources contributed to the growth of the timber industry.
The proclamation also recognizes Paragould’s connection to Arkansas political history. Junius Marion Futrell, who later became the state’s 30th governor, practiced law in Paragould before being appointed to the Second Division of the Second Circuit Court in 1922.
Futrell eventually served as governor during the Great Depression in the 1930s, leading Arkansas during one of the most difficult economic periods in the nation’s history.
Today, Paragould remains a major community in Northeast Arkansas and is known as “The Friendly City.” The city is home to several educational and medical institutions, including Arkansas Methodist Medical Center, Crowley’s Ridge College and Black River Technical College.
The city also has attractions that draw residents and visitors. People can attend performances at the Collins Theatre, enjoy the natural scenery at Crowley’s Ridge State Park or take part in the annual Loose Caboose Festival in downtown Paragould.
Those features are part of what the “Capital for a Day” program is intended to showcase. Rather than keeping state government activity centered in Little Rock, the program takes senior officials into communities around Arkansas.
For local leaders, the visit provides an opportunity to meet with state officials in person and discuss issues affecting their communities. For the state government, the program offers a closer look at the cities and towns that make up Arkansas.
The Paragould visit will be the twenty-first “Capital for a Day” designation under Sanders. For a short time, the city will serve as Arkansas’ seat of government.
In the proclamation, Sanders formally announced the designation and invited senior state government officials to accompany her to Paragould.
“NOW, THEREFORE, I, SARAH HUCKABEE SANDERS, Governor of the State of Arkansas, by virtue of the authority vested in me by the laws of the State of Arkansas, do hereby name Paragould, Arkansas, our Capital for a Day on August 12, 2026, and invite our senior state government officials to join me in a visit to the city.”
The proclamation was signed on August 7, with the Great Seal of Arkansas affixed to the document.
The one-day designation will bring state government closer to the people of Northeast Arkansas while putting Paragould’s history and present-day community life in the spotlight. It also continues an initiative Sanders has used to recognize communities across the state and create opportunities for state and local officials to work together.
For Paragould, the August 12 visit adds another chapter to a city history that began with the meeting of two railroad lines and grew through trade, timber and regional development.
For one day, the city will have a different distinction. Paragould will not only be the seat of Greene County but will temporarily serve as the seat of Arkansas state government as the governor and senior officials bring the “Capital for a Day” program to town.
