Little Rock, Arkansas – A community event focused on outdoor learning, family participation, and hands-on experience is set to take place this weekend as local educators and state agencies come together for a free fishing derby at Lake Nixon.

The event will be held on Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon at Lake Nixon, located at 18500 Cooper Orbit Road in Little Rock. Organizers say the derby is open to anglers of all ages and skill levels, making it accessible for both beginners and experienced fishermen.

The initiative is a joint effort involving the North Little Rock 6 Academy of Agricultural and Veterinary Sciences, the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission, the Arkansas State Parks, and the Arkansas Department of Education. Together, the groups aim to create an educational outdoor experience that encourages students and families to engage with nature in a practical and enjoyable way.

Participants are encouraged to bring their own fishing equipment, though organizers confirmed that gear will also be available on-site at no cost for those who need it. The goal, they say, is to remove barriers and ensure that anyone who wants to take part can do so regardless of experience or preparation.

The fishing derby is designed not only as a recreational activity, but also as an informal learning opportunity. State officials and educators involved in the event say outdoor experiences like fishing help students develop patience, environmental awareness, and a better understanding of local ecosystems.

The North Little Rock 6 Academy, which is hosting the event alongside state partners, has a deeper historical and educational significance within the community. The school, formerly known as Seventh Street Elementary, honors six Black students who played an important role in the civil rights era by attempting to desegregate North Little Rock High School in 1957. Those students were Richard Lindsey, Gerald Persons, Harold Smith, Eugene Hall, Frank Henderson, and William Henderson.

Today, the academy operates at 1901 North Maple Street in North Little Rock and focuses on hands-on education in agricultural and veterinary sciences for elementary students. School leaders say programs like the fishing derby reflect their broader mission of connecting students with real-world learning experiences beyond the classroom.

Events like Saturday’s derby also highlight ongoing partnerships between schools and state agencies in Arkansas. By combining educational goals with outdoor recreation, organizers hope to strengthen community ties while giving students a chance to learn in a different environment.

Officials involved in the planning say the event is intended to be relaxed and family-friendly, with no registration required. Attendees can simply arrive during event hours and participate.

While fishing will be the main activity, organizers also see the derby as an opportunity for families to spend time together outdoors, away from screens and daily routines. For many younger participants, it may also serve as their first introduction to fishing as a hobby.

As preparations continue, organizers are expecting a steady turnout from across the Little Rock area. With free access, available equipment, and support from multiple agencies, the Lake Nixon fishing derby is shaping up to be a simple but meaningful community gathering centered on nature, education, and shared experience.
