Dunbar Middle School in Little Rock could be added to National Registry of Historic Places in recognition of its rich history

Little Rock, Arkansas – A historic landmark in Little Rock is one step closer to receiving national recognition. Dunbar Magnet Middle School, located at the intersection of Wright Avenue and Ringo Street, is under consideration for inclusion in the National Registry of Historic Places. The school is already recognized for its state significance, but now, thanks to a federal grant, efforts are underway to secure a spot on the prestigious national list.

Dunbar has a special place in the heart of Little Rock’s history, especially within the African American community. For decades, it was the only public school in Little Rock for Black students. Its significance goes beyond education; it serves as a symbol of resilience and the fight for equal rights. This nomination is an effort to tell the full story of the campus, highlighting its crucial role in the civil rights movement and its longstanding impact on the city’s Black community.

“This is a significant step in recognizing the school’s historical and cultural importance,” said officials from the Little Rock School District. The push for the school’s inclusion on the National Registry is driven by a desire to preserve its legacy for future generations and ensure that its contributions to African American history are remembered.

The nomination process is part of a broader initiative by the city of Little Rock to identify and preserve historically significant sites. The effort was a collaboration between several organizations, including the Little Rock School District, the Historic Dunbar Neighborhood Association, and the Quapaw Quarter Association. These groups worked together to submit the nomination, hoping to further cement Dunbar’s legacy in American history.

As part of the nomination process, the Little Rock Historic District Commission will review Dunbar’s application at a public meeting scheduled for 4 p.m. on July 7, to be held in the City Hall Board Room. This meeting will provide an opportunity for the community to voice their thoughts and for officials to present the case for the school’s inclusion.

For those interested in learning more about the nomination process, additional information and the grant application can be accessed through the official nomination website.

Should the school’s application be approved, Dunbar Magnet Middle School will join a prestigious list of sites recognized for their cultural and historical value. This recognition would ensure that the story of this important institution is preserved for years to come, not just for the people of Little Rock but for all Americans.
