Conway, Arkansas – As winter weather grips Conway, city officials are taking action to ensure residents have safe and warm places to stay during the cold nights. The City of Conway has officially opened warming centers at three locations: Don Owen Sports Center, McGee Center, and the Conway Emergency Shelter. The initiative is part of the city’s ongoing commitment to protect the health and well-being of its residents during periods of extreme cold.
“As temperatures drop, Conway is committed to ensuring the safety and well-being of all our residents,” city officials said in a statement. “We’re pleased to announce the opening of warming centers at Don Owen Sports Center, McGee Center, and Conway Emergency Shelter. We encourage those in need to utilize these facilities and remind everyone to look out for their loved ones and neighbors.”
The Don Owen Sports Center, located at 10 Lower Ridge Road, will remain open daily from 7:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. For those in need of overnight shelter, check-in begins at 7:00 p.m. The facility does not allow pets, but it provides a safe environment for residents to escape the cold and access basic necessities.
The McGee Center at 3800 College Avenue also serves as a warming center, with hours from 7:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. While overnight stays are not permitted at this location, residents can take advantage of the warm space during the day. Pets are also not allowed at this facility.
For adults seeking overnight accommodation, the Conway Emergency Shelter at 1116 Gum Street opens check-in at 4:30 p.m. Each night, the shelter is available on a first-come, first-served basis for adults 18 years and older. This facility ensures that vulnerable populations have access to a safe place to sleep during extreme weather conditions.
City officials are also reaching out to the community for support. Residents who wish to donate items or have questions about the warming centers can contact the Office of the Mayor at (501) 450-6110. Donations and community involvement play an important role in keeping the warming centers stocked and operational throughout the winter season.
These centers provide more than just warmth. They offer residents a place to rest, access essential services, and connect with others during challenging weather conditions. By opening multiple locations across the city, Conway officials aim to ensure that no resident is left out in the cold.
With temperatures expected to remain low over the coming days, city leaders are urging residents to take advantage of these resources, check on neighbors and loved ones, and stay informed about local weather updates. The warming centers reflect Conway’s proactive approach to public safety and the city’s dedication to supporting its community through every season.
Whether for a few hours during the day or an overnight stay, Conway’s warming centers stand as a critical lifeline for those affected by winter’s chill, demonstrating the city’s commitment to protecting its most vulnerable residents.
