Little Rock, Arkansas – The 39th president of the United States, former President Jimmy Carter, died at the age of 100.
His wife, Rosalynn Carter, passed away on November 19, 2022, just over a year prior to his death. After meeting as kids in their birthplace of Plains, Georgia, the pair got married in 1946 and remained together for 77 years.
Throughout their lives, their love remained unbroken, and they are remembered as a loyal couple even after they passed away.
For a number of years, Jimmy Carter’s health had been deteriorating. He received a successful cancer diagnosis in 2015 and continued to be involved in public life.
But after many short hospital stays, the Carter Center reported in February 2023 that he had entered hospice care.
In keeping with his enduring ideals of modesty and self-respect, he decided to forgo more medical interventions and spend his last days at home.
President Carter’s attendance at his wife’s burial service in November 2022, while being in hospice care, was a potent testament to his will to celebrate her life.
Many of Carter’s domestic accomplishments were obscured by the economic slowdown, rising inflation, and the 444-day Iranian hostage crisis that he endured during his 1977–1981 presidency.
Carter is generally commended for his post-presidential efforts, especially through the Carter Center, which he founded in 1982, even though he only held office for one time.
With Carter personally leading programs in disease eradication, election monitoring, and conflict resolution, the center has grown into a significant force for advancing democracy, human rights, and global health.
Carter’s contributions to public health, including as his work with the Global 2000 Project, which assisted in bringing disease-preventive initiatives and clean water to poor countries, are also part of his legacy.
His post-presidential career reached a high point in 2002 when he was granted the Nobel Peace Prize for his work promoting peace and human rights.
Rosalynn Carter, a lifetime supporter of mental health awareness, was also instrumental in public service.
By co-founding the Rosalynn Carter Institute for Caregiving in 1987 to support family caregivers, she played a significant role in increasing awareness of mental health issues in the United States.
In addition to being married, the Carters shared a lifelong dedication to humanitarian service.
The world and American society have been forever changed by their collaboration, both personally and professionally.
