Arkansas – Arkansas State University announced on Tuesday that it will receive $2.1 million in federal funding to expand its steel research and testing capabilities, a move that university officials say will strengthen both academic programs and regional industry partnerships. The funds will support the acquisition of advanced, industry-grade testing equipment for the university’s Center for Advanced Materials and Steel Manufacturing, allowing students and researchers to work with cutting-edge technology.
U.S. Representative Rick Crawford played a key role in securing the appropriations. “I am proud of my work in Congress to ensure that Northeast Arkansas continues to have every resource to train, develop, and equip the excellent workforce needed to support the thriving steel industry,” Crawford said. “This funding will keep Arkansas State at the cutting edge of steel production research.” The investment reflects ongoing efforts to connect higher education with industry needs and to foster a skilled workforce for the steel sector.

The center has already been a focal point for regional steel innovation. In 2024, U.S. Senator John Boozman secured $10 million in federal grants for Arkansas State to further develop the facility. With the new $2.1 million allocation, A-State will continue to build on these efforts, enhancing its capacity to support research initiatives and industry collaborations while providing students with valuable workforce-ready skills.
