ARDOT reports that nearly 70 highways remain closed across Arkansas due to rising water levels from recent heavy rainfall

Little Rock, Arkansas – The Arkansas Department of Transportation (ARDOT) reported on Monday that approximately 70 highways across the state remain closed due to rising water levels from recent heavy rainfall. The closures are part of an ongoing issue that has affected transportation throughout the state, particularly in rural areas.

In a social media post, ARDOT explained that of the 70 closed roads, ten have suffered significant damage and are currently being evaluated by repair crews. These roads are expected to undergo extensive repairs before they can be safely reopened to the public. The agency is closely monitoring the situation and working to restore access as quickly as possible.

According to ARDOT’s closure report, around 24 counties—over a quarter of the state’s total—have at least one road closed due to high water, washout, or the need for pipe and culvert maintenance. Among the counties affected, Jackson County stands out with the highest number of closures, accounting for 13 closed roads. Independence County follows with six closures, while Clark, Clay, Mississippi, and Poinsett counties each have four highways closed due to the weather-related issues.

With many roads still impassable, ARDOT is urging drivers to avoid closed routes and find alternate ways to reach their destinations. The department also reminded the public of the dangers of driving through flooded areas, emphasizing that even relatively shallow water can quickly become hazardous to vehicles and their occupants.

The ongoing closures highlight the impact of severe weather on infrastructure, and authorities continue to work diligently to assess the damage and restore safe travel conditions across the state. As repairs progress, ARDOT will provide updates to keep residents informed about the status of highway reopenings.
