Little Rock, Arkansas – As the new school year approaches, families across Arkansas are making their final preparations, and community groups are stepping in to make that process a little easier.
Over the weekend, organizations in central Arkansas held back-to-school events that gave hundreds of students free school supplies, backpacks, food and other resources. The effort was aimed not only at helping children get ready for the classroom, but also at easing some of the costs facing families at the end of summer.
One of the largest events was hosted by the Center for Healing Hearts and Spirits in partnership with Omega Psi Phi Fraternity. The groups held their annual back-to-school block party, where more than 400 students received backpacks and school supplies.
Families also had access to food and other community resources during the event, giving parents an opportunity to prepare their children for school without having to cover every expense on their own.
Executive Director Joyce Raynor said the event was created with the financial pressure on families in mind.

“We’re trying to help the parents. They’re already overwhelmed with gas prices, food pricing and other expenses, and giving them these backpacks is really going to help them,” Raynor said.
The assistance will not stop with the weekend event. Raynor said the organization plans to deliver boxes of school supplies to several local schools during the first week of classes. That additional support is intended to help students and teachers once the school year is officially underway.
For many families, the final days before school begins can be a busy time. Parents spent the weekend making last-minute trips to stores, looking for essentials such as backpacks, shoes and classroom supplies.
Those purchases can quickly add up, especially for households preparing more than one child for school. Community events offering free supplies can therefore take some pressure off parents while making sure students have basic items ready when they walk into the classroom.
Students, meanwhile, were focused on a different part of the new school year. Many said they were excited about going back and seeing their friends and teachers again.
Another back-to-school gathering took place Sunday in North Little Rock at Eighth Street Missionary Baptist Church. The church held its annual Back-to-School Jamboree following its Sunday morning services.
Children and families attending the event received free backpacks packed with school supplies. The church also provided clothing, shoes and food, giving families several practical resources in one place.

There were activities for children as well, including snow cones and inflatable attractions. The event also included free haircuts and hair braiding services, helping students take care of some of their back-to-school needs before the first day.
As Arkansas communities continue preparing for the return to school, these events are providing more than just pencils, notebooks and backpacks. Organizers say the goal is to make sure students begin the year feeling prepared and supported, while giving families some help with the expenses that come with a new school year.
For hundreds of students in central Arkansas, the start of classes will now come with a new backpack, fresh supplies and a little less pressure on their families.
