Little Rock, Arkansas – The Little Rock Police Department’s Mounted Patrol Unit has taken on an unusual assignment far from home, joining public safety operations connected to the 2026 FIFA World Cup events held in Kansas City, Missouri.
Over the weekend, several LRPD officers traveled to the major international sporting events, marking what the department described as a rare opportunity to participate in security efforts on one of the world’s biggest stages for sports and global gatherings.
The mounted officers played a visible role throughout the events, using horseback patrols to help manage large crowds and maintain order in high-traffic fan areas. Their presence also allowed them to support other law enforcement agencies working together to ensure a safe environment for attendees.
Officials said the mounted unit helped provide high-visibility patrols, assisted with crowd control, and engaged directly with fans from different countries who gathered for the matches. The horses, often a point of public interest, also helped officers move through dense areas where vehicles and traditional patrols would be less effective.

The department noted that working alongside agencies from across the United States added an important collaborative element to the mission, with officers sharing responsibilities and coordinating efforts in real time during busy event operations.
LRPD highlighted that the experience offered both professional development and a unique chance to be part of an international sporting event that draws global attention. For many of the officers involved, it was an opportunity to apply their training in an unfamiliar but highly visible environment.
Mounted patrol units are often used in situations involving large crowds because of their mobility, height advantage, and ability to remain effective in tight or noisy environments. In Kansas City, those advantages proved useful as thousands of fans filled event areas throughout the weekend.
While the assignment was temporary, the department’s participation reflects the growing role of local law enforcement agencies in supporting large-scale national security efforts during major international events.
For the Little Rock officers involved, the experience marked a rare milestone in their service careers, combining everyday policing skills with the fast-paced demands of a global sporting event.
As the 2026 FIFA World Cup continues across multiple host cities, additional law enforcement agencies are expected to rotate through similar assignments, helping ensure safety while allowing fans to enjoy the matches in a secure environment.
