Calhoun County, Arkansas – A section of Highway 203 near East Camden in Calhoun County will be fully closed for several hours on Monday, April 20, as crews carry out essential utility work. The closure is part of a planned pipe replacement project that will temporarily change travel patterns in the area.

According to the Arkansas Department of Transportation, the affected stretch runs from Highway 274 to Highway 205. The shutdown is scheduled to begin at 6:30 a.m. and is expected to last until 5 p.m., depending on weather conditions. Officials emphasized that the work is weather permitting, meaning delays could occur if conditions are not suitable for construction.

The reason for the closure is straightforward but important. Crews will be replacing a pipe beneath the roadway, a task that requires full access to the work zone to ensure safety and efficiency. While disruptive for drivers, the project is intended to improve long-term infrastructure reliability in the area.

During the closure, Highway 203 will remain open only to local traffic. All other vehicles will need to follow a signed detour route designed to keep traffic moving around the work zone. Northbound drivers will be directed to take Highway 274 east to Highway 205 north before reconnecting with Highway 203. Southbound traffic will be redirected along Highway 205 south to Highway 274 west, eventually returning to Highway 203.

To guide motorists through the area, construction barrels, barricades, and clear signage will be placed along key points of the detour. Officials are urging drivers to remain alert, reduce speed in work zones, and follow posted instructions carefully, especially during early morning and afternoon travel peaks.

For those planning trips through the region, updated travel conditions can be checked through official traffic resources such as IDriveArkansas.com or ARDOT.gov. These platforms provide real-time updates that may help drivers avoid delays or adjust routes in advance.

Media inquiries regarding the project can be directed to Ellen Coulter at the Arkansas Department of Transportation. She can be reached by email at [email protected] or by phone at 501.765.9117.

While the closure is temporary, officials note that short-term inconvenience is necessary to complete critical infrastructure improvements. Once finished, the pipe replacement is expected to support safer and more reliable travel along this corridor of Highway 203.
