Little Rock, Arkansas – A moment of reflection and renewed commitment to safety is set to take place in Little Rock as state transportation leaders prepare to mark the start of National Work Zone Awareness Week with a special memorial event.

The Arkansas Department of Transportation will host the opening ceremony on Friday, April 17, at 11 a.m. at the Fallen Work Memorial located at its Central Office in Little Rock. The gathering is designed to honor workers who have been injured or lost in work zones while also reinforcing the importance of safety for both road crews and drivers.

The event will also include a presentation recognizing ARDOT’s Safety Partner of the Year Award, an acknowledgment of those who have contributed to improving work zone safety across the state. In addition, the program will feature a deeply personal moment as the spouse of an ARDOT employee who suffered severe injuries in a work zone is also being recognized, highlighting the real human impact behind roadway safety efforts.

Speaking ahead of the event, Arkansas Highway Commission Chairman Philip Taldo emphasized that safety remains at the core of the agency’s mission.

“For ARDOT, safety has always been the most important core value, and they are putting that into action every day,” said Arkansas Highway Commission Chairman Philip Taldo.

He also stressed that responsibility does not fall on one group alone, but must be shared between workers and the traveling public.

“Work zone safety needs to be a joint effort between road workers and the traveling public. We all need to work together so everyone can get home safely.”

Work zones across Arkansas continue to present risks, particularly when drivers are distracted or fail to reduce speed in construction areas. In response, ARDOT has expanded a range of safety campaigns and enforcement tools aimed at reducing crashes and saving lives.

Among these efforts is the “Slow Down, Phone Down” campaign, which encourages drivers to avoid distractions and remain alert when approaching highway work zones. The department has also implemented speed enforcement cameras and handheld device detection technology in select work zones to help improve compliance and reduce dangerous driving behaviors.

According to ARDOT Director Jared D. Wiley, these combined strategies are already making a measurable difference.

“Between ARDOT’s Slow Down, Phone Down Work Zone Safety campaign, the work zone speed enforcement cameras, the handheld device detection cameras in work zones, and a number of other safety initiatives, we are seeing a reduction in the number of crashes, injuries, and fatalities in Arkansas work zones,” said Wiley.

While progress has been made, Wiley made it clear that the effort is far from complete and that long-term safety goals remain ambitious.

“However, our work is never done. Our mission will always be to work toward zero deaths.”

The upcoming event will take place at 10324 I-30 in Little Rock, bringing together transportation officials, employees, safety advocates, and community members to reflect on both progress and the challenges that remain.

National Work Zone Awareness Week itself is a nationwide initiative founded by the American Traffic Safety Services Association, the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials, and the Federal Highway Administration. The campaign focuses on educating the public about the dangers faced by road workers and encouraging safer driving habits in construction zones.

For Arkansas officials, the memorial event is more than a formal kickoff—it is a reminder of the human stories behind infrastructure work. Every lane closure, detour, and construction cone represents workers carrying out essential tasks in environments where conditions can change quickly and risks are ever present.

As the state prepares to launch another year of awareness efforts, leaders hope the message will reach drivers in a lasting way. Slowing down, paying attention, and respecting work zones may seem simple, but officials say these actions can make the difference between life and tragedy.

With the memorial as its backdrop, this year’s kickoff stands as both a tribute and a call to action—honoring those affected by work zone incidents while reinforcing the shared responsibility of keeping Arkansas roads safe for everyone.
