Little Rock city leaders unanimously approve a 25 million dollar project to revitalize the River Market and downtown area

Little Rock, Arkansas – Little Rock city leaders have approved a $25 million redevelopment plan aimed at revitalizing the River Market, signaling a major transformation for the downtown area. The decision, made during a special-called meeting on Tuesday, was unanimous, reflecting broad support among members of the Little Rock Board of Directors.

The River Market, once a bustling hub in the heart of downtown, has faced challenges in recent years. Aging buildings, safety concerns, and empty pavilions have contributed to a decline in activity and interest, leaving city leaders eager for a fresh vision to restore the area’s vibrancy.

The approved project will be led by St. Louis-based developer New and Found, who will oversee the redevelopment efforts from the design phase through construction. City officials emphasized that this vote marks a turning point in the revitalization of downtown Little Rock, laying the groundwork for a future that blends commerce, culture, and community space.

“I think it’s important to recognize when the ball gets rolling to get us in that direction … I think [with] this resolution, when we look back at downtown five [to] seven years from now, [change] started on this day,” the board of directors said during the meeting. The statement captures the sense of optimism surrounding the project and the hope that the River Market will once again become a central gathering place for residents and visitors alike.

The $25 million initiative will now move into the design phase, where architects and planners will develop detailed plans for the revitalized space. Construction is slated to begin this summer, with a grand reopening of the River Market anticipated in 2027. Officials say the project aims not only to improve infrastructure and aesthetics but also to foster a safe and inviting environment for community events, dining, and small businesses.

City leaders noted that the redevelopment of the River Market is part of a broader effort to enhance downtown Little Rock, attract new investment, and provide spaces that reflect the city’s evolving needs. By engaging a developer with experience in urban revitalization, officials hope to bring both innovation and practical solutions to the project, ensuring its long-term success.

Residents and business owners in the area are expected to see gradual changes over the next few years, with improvements aimed at making the River Market a destination once again. From upgraded buildings to vibrant public spaces, the project represents a significant investment in the city’s future, blending modern design with a renewed sense of community.

With the approval now in place, all eyes are on the design and construction phases, as Little Rock looks forward to a River Market that is safer, more welcoming, and a true centerpiece of downtown life.
