“We have a wonderful tradition out here for folks to come out here and enjoy here in Jonesboro,” said Danny Kapales, Jonesboro Parks and Recreation director. “It’s one of the big pieces that makes Jonesboro a destination for Christmas.” For Kapales, the event represents more than just lights; it is a celebration that brings the community together and draws visitors from near and far.
The preparation for Christmas at The Park is no small feat. Kapales explained that staff must balance decorating the park with maintaining regular park activities, which can make November a particularly busy month. “November is a big transition month for us because we’re still in the middle of practices and activity going on out here while this is being set up,” he said. “It’s a big juggle for us to make sure that we help protect what Adam is trying to do but also still provide a facility for our residents to utilize.” Despite the logistical challenges, the team worked diligently to ensure the park was ready for opening night.
A highlight of the display this year is the impressive light tunnel, which Kapales described as a standout feature. “From my understanding, it’s one of the largest tunnels around,” he said. “Just be able to drive through and have lights engulf you. The tree being right here is great to look at.” Visitors drove and walked through the tunnel, experiencing an immersive holiday display that set the tone for a festive season.
