Minor earthquake strikes near Smithville early Saturday morning but causes no reported damage

Lawrence County, Arkansas – Residents near Smithville were startled early Saturday morning by a minor earthquake, though no one has reported actually feeling the tremor. The U.S. Geological Survey confirmed that a 2.2 magnitude quake occurred just before sunrise, adding to the region’s long history of occasional seismic activity.

According to the USGS, the earthquake struck at 3:19 a.m. on November 15, located approximately 3.9 miles east-northeast of Smithville, Arkansas. The tremor was relatively shallow, with a depth of about seven miles, and was small enough that it went unnoticed by the local population.

“The USGS asks those who felt the quake to report it at the USGS website. As of Saturday morning, no one had reported feeling the quake,” officials said, emphasizing the importance of citizen observations in helping scientists track seismic activity across the country. Even minor quakes, while unlikely to cause damage, contribute valuable data for researchers studying fault lines and earthquake patterns.

While a 2.2 magnitude earthquake is considered minor and typically does not cause damage or pose a threat to people, the event serves as a reminder that Arkansas is among the states where small earthquakes are relatively common. Experts say the majority of these tremors are too weak to be noticed without sensitive instruments, but they are carefully monitored to better understand the state’s geology.

Local authorities have not reported any damage or injuries as a result of the early morning event. Residents were largely unaware of the quake, though some may have noticed faint vibrations or distant rumbling if awake during the early hours.

Seismologists continue to study the area to monitor for any unusual seismic activity and urge residents to remain informed about safety precautions in the event of stronger earthquakes. While a magnitude 2.2 quake is mild, preparing for potential larger events is a standard recommendation in regions that occasionally experience tremors.

Though small, the earthquake near Smithville highlights the natural processes occurring beneath Arkansas and underscores the ongoing importance of monitoring even minor seismic events. Residents are encouraged to report any future experiences of tremors to the USGS to assist in mapping and understanding the state’s earthquake activity.
