BBB warns consumers about a new ghost tapping scam that could secretly charge your cell phone payments

St. Louis, Arkansas – The Better Business Bureau is alerting the public to a new scam that could affect anyone who uses the tap-to-pay feature on their cell phone. Dubbed “ghost tapping,” this emerging fraud involves scammers secretly charging your mobile wallet or tap-enabled card without your knowledge. While the underlying Near Field Communication (NFC) technology is generally considered safe, the BBB warns that opportunistic criminals can exploit it, particularly in crowded or distracting environments.

Scammers are reportedly employing several tactics to carry out these fraudulent transactions. One common method involves getting close to victims in public spaces. Someone might bump into you while surreptitiously charging your phone or card. In other cases, fraudsters pose as legitimate vendors at events, flea markets, or festivals, setting up fake stands and asking for tap payments. Charity scams are also on the rise, where a small donation request turns into a larger, unauthorized charge. Additionally, scammers often rush the process, counting on users to tap their device without carefully checking the merchant name or transaction amount.

“The best way to avoid losing money is to review your financial accounts regularly and contact your bank as soon as you notice any suspicious activity,” said Michelle L. Corey, BBB St. Louis president and CEO. Corey emphasized that vigilance and routine monitoring are essential defenses against ghost tapping. Once scammers have access to your payment information, they often conduct small transactions to avoid detection, making it even more important for users to stay alert.

The BBB offers several strategies for protecting yourself from these types of scams. One effective method is using Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) protection. An RFID-blocking wallet or sleeve for your credit card or mobile device can prevent wireless skimming and unauthorized transactions. Another critical step is always confirming payment details before tapping. Take the time to check the merchant’s name and the amount on the terminal screen, and avoid being rushed into a purchase.

Regularly monitoring your accounts is another key protective measure. Daily checks make it easier to spot unfamiliar charges quickly. Keep track of subscriptions, typical charges, and recurring payments so any discrepancies stand out immediately. Many banks also offer transaction alerts, which can provide real-time notifications for every charge, allowing you to act quickly if something looks suspicious.

Experts also suggest limiting tap-to-pay use in high-risk situations. In crowded areas or events with heavy foot traffic, it may be safer to swipe or insert your card rather than using tap-to-pay. This simple precaution can reduce the risk of ghost tapping and give you more control over your transactions.

The BBB is urging anyone who believes they have been a victim of a ghost tapping scam to report it immediately. Using the BBB Scam Tracker, victims can document incidents, alert authorities, and help law enforcement and financial institutions track patterns of fraud. Reporting also raises public awareness and helps the BBB provide updated guidance to protect consumers.

While mobile payments and tap-to-pay technology are convenient, they are not entirely risk-free. The BBB’s warning serves as a timely reminder that scammers are constantly looking for new ways to exploit unsuspecting users. By staying vigilant, regularly checking accounts, and using protective measures, consumers can reduce the risk of falling victim to ghost tapping.

As technology continues to advance, experts say that consumers need to remain educated and cautious. Scammers rely on distraction, speed, and unsuspecting behavior, and even a brief lapse in attention can lead to financial loss. Taking a few extra seconds to confirm details or using additional safeguards can make a significant difference.

In today’s fast-paced world, mobile payments are increasingly popular, but users must balance convenience with caution. By following the BBB’s guidance, paying attention to surroundings, and monitoring accounts closely, consumers can enjoy the benefits of tap-to-pay while minimizing the risk of fraud.
