Pope County, Arkansas – A significant clerical mistake led to a state inmate being inadvertently released from Pope County custody, authorities confirmed Monday. The error involved 45-year-old Robert Eugene Lackey Jr., who was in the county for a court appearance on non-violent charges.
Officials with the Pope County Sheriff’s Office explained that Lackey, who was transported from the Arkansas Department of Corrections (ADC) for a court hearing, was mistakenly allowed to post bond on pending charges last Friday afternoon. “A clerical error was made, officials said, and Lackey was allowed to bond out on Friday afternoon on pending charges.” The mistake came to light on Monday, prompting an immediate response from law enforcement.
Since the error was discovered, searches have been underway to locate Lackey. Authorities are urging the public to remain vigilant and report any sightings. Anyone with information on his whereabouts is encouraged to contact Sheriff’s deputies at 479-968-0911.

According to the ADC website, Lackey is heavily tattooed, 5 feet 9 inches tall, and weighs 187 pounds. He has been designated as a maximum-security inmate since December 2024, reflecting a history of multiple criminal offenses. His most recent conviction, dating back to 2022, involved theft of property.
The Pope County Sheriff’s Office has not released details on how the clerical mistake occurred, but officials emphasized that steps are being taken to prevent similar incidents in the future. The release of a maximum-security inmate, even temporarily, raises questions about procedural safeguards and oversight in the transfer of inmates for court appearances.
Residents and nearby communities have expressed concern over the situation, as authorities continue the search. Local law enforcement is coordinating with the ADC and other relevant agencies to ensure Lackey is apprehended safely and swiftly.
This unusual incident serves as a reminder of the critical importance of meticulous record-keeping and vigilance within the criminal justice system, especially when handling high-risk inmates. Authorities remain committed to resolving the situation quickly and keeping the public informed.
