Little Rock Zoo welcomes new baby chimp and invites public to help choose her name

Little Rock, Arkansas – Excitement is swinging through the Little Rock Zoo as staff and visitors celebrate the arrival of the newest member of the chimpanzee family. The baby chimp, born to mom Kianga, was revealed this week in a fun and joyful gender announcement: It’s a girl!

Zoo officials said the tiny newcomer is healthy, alert, and already showing signs of curiosity and playfulness that chimpanzees are famous for. While the public admires her antics, zoo staff are turning their attention to another important task: choosing the perfect name for the little girl.

“Now it is time to pick the perfect name for the newest member of the camp,” zoo officials said. To involve the community, the zoo has opened a public vote with five carefully selected names. Each name has a special meaning in Swahili, the language spoken in regions where chimpanzees live in the wild.

The options include Mkali (muh-KAH-lee), meaning bright; Mwezi (MWEH-Zee), meaning moon; Kamari (KAH-mah-ree), meaning moonlight; Amali (uh-MAH-lee), meaning hope; and Ndanya (N-DAN-ya), meaning rainbow. Zoo staff hope the names will reflect both the chimpanzee’s spirit and her cultural roots in the wild.

Visitors and animal lovers can cast their vote by visiting the Little Rock Zoo’s Facebook page. The zoo encourages everyone to participate and be part of this special moment. The winning name will be announced soon, giving the community a chance to celebrate the baby chimp in a very personal way.

Officials emphasized that involving the public in naming the chimpanzee strengthens the bond between the zoo and the community. “It’s a fun way for people to connect with our animals and feel like part of their lives,” one staff member said.

With a name yet to be chosen, she is sure to capture hearts even more as she grows, swings through the trees, and explores her new world under careful zoo supervision.
