North Little Rock, Arkansas – The 9th annual “So Row Fundraiser” took place this past weekend, bringing together teams of six for a thrilling rowing competition aimed at raising funds for Arkansas Special Olympics athletes. The event, hosted by Strong Together Fitness, saw participants competing not only for victory on the water but also for a greater cause: supporting the leadership, sports, and health assessments of Special Olympics athletes across the state.
Stephanie Price, who has been involved with the Special Olympics for 26 years, was among those excited to contribute her time and energy to this year’s competition. As a coach in the rowing contest, Price shared her passion for the event, highlighting the immense joy and excitement that comes from being part of the Special Olympics family. “I almost always lose my voice because it’s just so exciting. And it’s so much fun,” she said, emphasizing how much the athletes and coaches alike enjoy the camaraderie and the opportunity to give back.
Each team at the fundraiser was required to include either a rower or a coach who is also involved in the Special Olympics, ensuring that those directly impacted by the organization’s work are integral to the event. This strong connection between the event and the athletes adds a layer of personal investment and community spirit to the competition, with every stroke on the water symbolizing a step forward in empowering individuals with disabilities.

Tony Phillips, the driving force behind the event and a key organizer, shared the core mission behind the fundraiser. “It’s not about us. It’s bigger than us. And we just got to find our footing — and be able to minister where our feet are,” Phillips explained. For him, the event is an opportunity to give back in a way that allows others to dig deeper into what they love, specifically their passion for athletics. His heartfelt message echoed throughout the competition, reminding participants that their efforts transcend the event itself and contribute to a larger mission of inclusion and empowerment.
The “So Row Fundraiser” is more than just a fun competition; it’s an event designed to make a tangible difference in the lives of Special Olympics athletes. The funds raised go toward providing essential services such as leadership training, health assessments, and sports programming. This initiative allows athletes to pursue their dreams on and off the field, ensuring they receive the necessary support to thrive in all areas of their lives.
Price, who is an advocate for the importance of training and preparation, summed up the essence of the competition. “You have to train for what you want. This isn’t given to you,” she said, underscoring the dedication and hard work that goes into being an athlete, regardless of the challenges faced. The event brought together a diverse group of people from various backgrounds, all united by their shared commitment to supporting the Special Olympics and its athletes.
As the day wrapped up with cheers, applause, and a renewed sense of community, it was clear that the “So Row Fundraiser” had once again proven its ability to raise not just money but also awareness and support for a cause that changes lives.
