Reflecting on his experience, Nguyen spoke emotionally about the sacrifices his family made for the chance to start anew in the U.S. He shared, “It will make you feel like how grateful you really are, to be standing right here, be where your feet are and to really appreciate how many people sacrificed their life and their family’s lives and the loved ones for my chance to for my family members and family friends.” Nguyen expressed deep gratitude for the opportunity to help others, as his own family had been helped when they first arrived in the country.

Another notable speaker at the ceremony was Judge Wendy Duong, who reflected on her personal journey from refugee to legal scholar. Duong, the first Vietnamese American to hold judicial office in the United States, expressed her thanks for the life-changing experience at Fort Chaffee, saying, “It’s an experience that stays for a lifetime, and I’m so glad that I ended up in Fort Chaffee.” Duong’s success story exemplifies the remarkable potential that these refugees brought with them, transforming their adversity into accomplishments in various fields.
