Arkansas – In a recent case that has drawn significant attention, 50-year-old Shannon Barnett has been sentenced to a lengthy prison term following his guilty plea to multiple serious offenses. On March 3, 2025, Barnett pleaded guilty to charges including fleeing from law enforcement, failure to appear in court, and possession of a firearm by a prohibited person. His extensive criminal history, which includes theft, drug-related offenses, and additional firearm charges, has resulted in a total sentence of 50 years in the Arkansas Department of Corrections.
Barnett’s criminal troubles stretch back several years. In June 2020, he was placed on probation after being convicted for offenses like possession of a controlled substance, forgery, and possession of a firearm as a prohibited person. However, his behavior quickly escalated, and he was involved in two separate incidents of fleeing law enforcement while on probation.
The first of these occurred on March 15, 2023, when Barnett attempted to flee from deputies of the Saline County Sheriff’s Department. His efforts to escape led to a crash into a house, after which Barnett tried to flee on foot. This incident marked the beginning of his pattern of reckless behavior while evading authorities.
Just under a year later, on February 29, 2024, Barnett once again attempted to escape from law enforcement. This time, during the pursuit, he nearly collided with other vehicles and even ran a red light. The dangerous chase ended when an Arkansas State Police (ASP) trooper intervened with a tactical vehicle intervention (TVI), successfully stopping Barnett’s vehicle and bringing the pursuit to a halt.
In May 2024, Barnett faced a serious consequence for his continued disregard for the law. Saline County Judge Josh Farmer ruled that Barnett had violated his probation due to the two fleeing incidents. As a result, he was sentenced to 30 years in the Arkansas Department of Corrections.

However, the legal consequences for Barnett did not end there. On March 3, 2025, Barnett entered into a plea agreement for new charges, including the recent fleeing incidents. As part of the agreement, he was sentenced to an additional 20 years in prison. These sentences will run consecutively, meaning Barnett will serve a total of 50 years behind bars.
Deputy Prosecuting Attorney Shea Long, who was involved in the case, expressed relief that Barnett will face serious consequences for his reckless actions. “These are the types of offenses where multiple people are put at serious risk of injury or death due to one person’s actions. I appreciate the efforts of the Saline County Sheriff’s Office and the Arkansas State Police in getting this dangerous individual off the streets,” Long stated.
The Arkansas State Police also expressed their satisfaction with the outcome of the case. Col. Mike Hagar, the head of the ASP, emphasized the importance of holding those who attempt to evade law enforcement accountable. “This recent conviction follows closely on the heels of a commitment from state prosecutors to rigorously pursue those who attempt to evade law enforcement,” Hagar said. “I commend the Saline County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office and the Saline County courts for ensuring that Barnett is held responsible for his dangerous and irresponsible conduct.”
Currently incarcerated at the Cummins Unit, Barnett’s 50-year sentence serves as a stark reminder of the serious consequences of criminal actions, particularly when they put the lives of others at risk. His case underscores the commitment of Arkansas authorities to pursue justice and ensure public safety in the face of lawless behavior.
