Traffic slows for miles as crash disrupts northbound I-57 travel through Sherwood

Sherwood, Arkansas – Evening traffic through Sherwood moved at a crawl Tuesday after a crash on northbound Interstate 57 caused significant delays and brought emergency crews to the scene. The incident, which occurred during a busy travel period, quickly backed up vehicles and created long lines stretching toward North Little Rock.

According to the Arkansas Department of Transportation, the crash happened at 5:25 p.m. just past the Wildwood exit in Sherwood. Officials confirmed that at least one person was injured, though the extent of those injuries had not been released as responders continued working along the roadway.

Maps from iDriveArkansas showed the impact spreading across multiple areas of the interstate. The affected spots included the right lane, the right shoulder and the Wildwood exit on-ramp — a combination that left drivers with few options to move through the area without delay. With traffic funneling into fewer open lanes, congestion rapidly built up and pushed back toward McCain in North Little Rock.

Law enforcement and medical crews remained on site into the evening, directing vehicles and assisting those involved in the crash. Drivers moving northbound were seen merging early and inching forward, trying to navigate around the closed portions of the highway. For many, the slowdown added several minutes — if not more — to their commute.

Officials urged the public to approach the area with caution while first responders continued their work. As recovery teams cleared debris and investigated the scene, traffic continued to ebb and flow, with occasional stops as tow trucks and emergency vehicles shifted positions.

Motorists hoping to avoid the congestion were encouraged to use alternate routes until lanes reopened fully. Although conditions were expected to improve later in the night, transportation officials noted that cleanup and safety checks can take time, especially along heavily traveled corridors like I-57.

More details are expected as authorities release updates on the cause of the crash and the condition of the injured individual.
