Suspect in deadly shooting south of Atkins apprehended after two hour manhunt by Pope County deputies

Atkins, Arkansas – Authorities reported a deadly shooting south of Atkins Wednesday afternoon, resulting in the death of 64-year-old Randy Joe Ruddell and the arrest of a suspect after a tense, two-hour manhunt.

Pope County Sheriff’s Office deputies were dispatched to the scene at approximately 3:52 p.m. on December 17, according to a spokesperson. Upon arrival, law enforcement located the victim, identified as Randy Joe Ruddell, who had suffered fatal injuries. The circumstances surrounding the shooting remain under investigation, with authorities focused on gathering additional evidence and witness statements.

The suspect, identified as 36-year-old Kyle Brandon Ruddell, reportedly fled the scene into a nearby wooded area, carrying a weapon. Deputies launched an extensive search operation to locate him, involving coordinated efforts with assisting law enforcement agencies in the region. After a two-hour search, Ruddell was apprehended and taken into custody without further incident.

“Kyle Brandon Ruddell is currently being held at the Pope County Detention Center on charges of first-degree murder and attempted murder,” the spokesperson confirmed. The sheriff’s office emphasized that the investigation is ongoing as authorities work to fully reconstruct the events leading up to the shooting.

Randy Joe Ruddell, the victim, leaves behind family and friends who are now seeking answers and justice. Authorities urge anyone with additional information about the incident to come forward as the investigation continues.

The arrest of Kyle Brandon Ruddell brings some measure of closure to the immediate threat in the area, but it also raises broader questions about safety and prevention. First-degree murder and attempted murder charges carry serious legal consequences, reflecting the gravity of the crime.
