Russellville, Arkansas – The Russellville School District has turned to one of Arkansas’s most experienced college coaches to lead its girls basketball program, announcing Dave Wilbers as the new head coach of the Russellville High School Lady Cyclones.
Wilbers arrives in Russellville with more than 30 years of coaching experience across high school and college basketball, bringing a résumé built on consistent winning, program building, and long-term player development. Most recently, he spent 19 seasons as head coach of the Arkansas Tech Golden Suns, where he became one of the most recognizable figures in the program’s history.
During his time at Arkansas Tech Golden Suns, Wilbers compiled an impressive 382-162 record. His leadership helped guide the program to 12 conference championships and nine NCAA Tournament appearances, establishing a strong competitive identity that lasted nearly two decades.
District officials in Russellville said they see Wilbers as a major addition to the Lady Cyclones program, pointing to his long record of success and experience at the collegiate level. They believe his background will help strengthen both the culture and competitiveness of the team moving forward.
Wilbers himself expressed gratitude for the opportunity and optimism about the future of the program. In a statement, he thanked school leadership and the hiring committee and shared his excitement about joining the community.
“Together we will work to build a championship team in the classroom, off the floor, and on the court,” Wilbers said. “I look forward to working with and coaching our Cyclone players. Russellville is a special place that is our home with great people. I look forward to the future of Lady Cyclone Basketball and the great memories that will be made!”
Before his long tenure at Arkansas Tech, Wilbers built his coaching foundation in Oklahoma high school basketball at Putnam City and Welch. He then moved into the collegiate ranks, gaining experience through assistant coaching roles at several programs, including the University of Missouri-Kansas City, Oral Roberts, the University of Tulsa, and the University of Missouri.
That wide-ranging background helped shape his coaching style, which emphasizes structure, discipline, and player development over multiple seasons. When he took over the Golden Suns program in 2007, he quickly made an impact, leading the team to a national No. 1 ranking in just his second season.
Over the years, Wilbers developed numerous standout athletes. His teams produced seven All-Americans and 41 All-Conference players during his tenure, and he currently ranks second in all-time wins in Golden Suns program history. His ability to sustain success across different rosters became one of his defining traits.
Beyond his coaching résumé, Wilbers also has deep academic and personal ties to the Midwest. He is a graduate of Liberal High School in Kansas and earned degrees from Oklahoma Christian University and Fort Hays State University.
His move to Russellville also carries a personal connection. His wife, Christina, has previously been involved in coaching within the district as an assistant volleyball and basketball coach during Wilbers’ time at Arkansas Tech. Their family also has strong ties to the community, as their two children, Bailey and Brett, both graduated from Russellville High School.
The addition of Wilbers signals a new chapter for the Lady Cyclones basketball program, which now looks to blend its existing foundation with the experience of a coach who has competed at some of the highest levels of collegiate basketball in the region.
For Russellville, the hire represents both a leadership change and a long-term investment in athletic development. With preseason preparation ahead, attention now shifts to how quickly Wilbers can translate his college success into the high school game and shape the next era of Lady Cyclones basketball.
