Jonesboro, Arkansas – NEA Baptist Memorial Hospital continued its annual tradition of honoring local first responders Friday by providing them with a free breakfast in recognition of the anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.

Dozens of police officers, firefighters and emergency medical services workers attended the event at the hospital’s conference center. The gathering gave first responders an opportunity to enjoy a meal, spend time with colleagues and receive thanks for the work they do throughout Northeast Arkansas.

The hospital began the tradition in 2015. Each year, the breakfast serves as a way to recognize the men and women who respond to emergencies, protect the public and help people during some of the most difficult moments of their lives.

This year’s event came as communities across the country marked the 25th anniversary of the attacks on America. NEA Baptist used the occasion to remember the first responders who went toward danger on Sept. 11, 2001, and those who have continued that tradition of service.

“On the 25th anniversary of the attacks on America, we remember those who ran toward the danger and saved countless lives with their selflessness and sacrifice,” the hospital said in a news release. “Thank you to all first responders for everything you do today and every day.”

The breakfast brought together members of several public safety agencies. Jonesboro Police Chief Rick Elliott and Mayor Harold Copenhaver were among the local leaders who attended Friday’s gathering.

For many of the first responders, the event offered a chance to pause during busy schedules and connect with other people working in law enforcement, fire protection and emergency medical services. Their duties often require them to respond quickly, work long hours and assist residents during emergencies.

The hospital also made to-go boxes available for first responders who could not remain at the conference center. The option allowed those workers to take a meal with them while continuing their duties.

By continuing the breakfast, NEA Baptist Memorial Hospital recognized both the history behind the Sept. 11 anniversary and the ongoing role of first responders in the local community. The event honored the sacrifices made by emergency workers in the past while expressing appreciation for those serving Northeast Arkansas today.
