Little Rock officials warn residents that gunfire and personal fireworks are illegal during New Year’s Eve celebrations

Little Rock, Arkansas – As New Year’s Eve approaches, city officials in Little Rock are reminding residents that both gunfire and personal fireworks are strictly prohibited within city limits. Authorities are urging citizens to celebrate responsibly and within the law to prevent injuries, property damage, and dangerous incidents.

“Celebratory gunfire to mark the new year is extremely dangerous because stray bullets could cause death, injury or property damage,” officials warned. With festivities expected throughout the city, the Little Rock Police Department (LRPD) is taking steps to ensure public safety while reminding residents of the legal restrictions.

It is illegal to discharge a firearm or set off fireworks anywhere within the city boundaries. Residents are advised that any suspected gunfire should be reported immediately by calling 911. Police emphasize that this is a matter of life and death, and swift reporting can help prevent serious accidents.

For non-emergency situations involving fireworks, city officials have set up a dedicated email address for residents to report violations: [email protected]. Messages sent to this account will be reviewed and assigned to an officer. Officials explained that while residents will receive automated confirmations of their reports, direct contact with an officer should not be expected unless illegal activity is witnessed in person.

“When police witness illegal activity, violators will receive citations, and illegal fireworks will be seized,” the city said. To streamline reporting and minimize confusion, the email account will be actively monitored starting Wednesday, Dec. 31, at 6 p.m. and continuing until Thursday, Jan. 1, at 7 a.m. Residents are encouraged to use this email for non-emergency situations only, reserving 911 calls for gunfire, injuries, or other urgent emergencies.

Authorities stress that the combination of illegal gunfire and fireworks poses a significant risk, especially in densely populated areas. Even a single stray bullet can result in unintended tragedy, while fireworks incidents can cause burns, fires, and damage to vehicles or homes. City officials are asking residents to look out for one another and report any violations responsibly.

In addition to enforcement, LRPD and city leaders hope public awareness campaigns will reduce the likelihood of injuries and property damage this New Year’s Eve. Officials are reminding residents that the best way to celebrate safely is to enjoy community events, professional fireworks displays, and gatherings that follow city regulations.

By following these rules, Little Rock residents can welcome the new year without jeopardizing their safety or the safety of others. City authorities urge everyone to celebrate legally, responsibly, and with an awareness of the serious risks posed by illegal gunfire and fireworks.
