Heavy winter weather causes the awning at Murphy USA gas station in Benton to collapse leaving pumps damaged

Benton, Arkansas – The ongoing winter storm sweeping across Arkansas has caused widespread disruption, and in Benton, its impact was made very visible at a local Murphy USA gas station. The awning above the pumps, located near the Walmart, collapsed under the weight of heavy snow, leaving the structure completely destroyed.

According to officials, the combination of snow, sleet, and ice in the area has created hazardous conditions not only on the roads but also for buildings and structures exposed to the elements. In some locations, the accumulation of snow has been so severe that roofs, awnings, and other structures have given way entirely.

The gas station’s collapsed awning has rendered it temporarily inoperable. Drivers are advised that “for now, it’s safe to assume that you won’t be able to get gas at this station for a while until things are repaired!” Murphy USA has not yet released a timeline for when the station will reopen or the repairs will be completed, but crews are expected to assess the damage as soon as conditions allow.

Local authorities remind residents to exercise caution when traveling in Benton and other affected areas. Roads are icy and snow-packed, and the storm has led to multiple incidents of property damage in addition to the collapsed awning. Emergency services continue to monitor the situation and respond to incidents as quickly as possible.

While the destruction at Murphy USA has been dramatic, officials say that such collapses are becoming increasingly common during extreme winter events, particularly when heavy snow accumulates on flat or lightly sloped structures. Experts note that the added weight can overwhelm supports, especially if ice has formed on top of the snow.

Residents are urged to stay vigilant and avoid unnecessary travel until the storm subsides. Authorities also recommend that property owners check roofs and overhangs for heavy snow buildup and take precautions where safe to do so. For those in Benton, the collapsed Murphy USA awning is a stark reminder of the storm’s strength and the potential dangers it carries.

With more snow and freezing temperatures expected in the coming days, recovery efforts are just beginning, and local businesses and residents alike will need to navigate the challenges posed by this severe winter weather.
