Arkansas – Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders has named Cabot, Arkansas, as the state’s “Capital for a Day” on September 30, giving the Lonoke County community a temporary role as the seat of state government.

The announcement is part of Sanders’ “Capital for a Day” program, which brings senior state government officials to communities around Arkansas. During these visits, state leaders meet with local officials and highlight the history, people and development of the communities selected.

Cabot will become the 24th city to take part in the program under Sanders. The designation means the city will momentarily serve as Arkansas’ seat of government while the governor and senior state officials visit the community.

In the proclamation announcing the event, Sanders highlighted several important moments in Cabot’s history. The city, located just outside Arkansas’ capital city in the northwestern part of Lonoke County, was incorporated on November 9, 1891.

Cabot’s development was closely connected to the railroad. The Cairo and Fulton Railroad reached the area in 1873, leading to the construction of a water and fuel stop. That facility helped establish the community that would eventually become known as Cabot.

The city later developed into an important farming community. In the 1930s, the Central Arkansas Milk Producers Association was formed, adding to Cabot’s agricultural identity and helping establish its reputation as a growing farming area.

Another major period of growth came in the 1940s. The opening of the Arkansas Ordnance Plant in nearby Jacksonville in 1942 brought new workers to the region. Many employees moved to Cabot, contributing to a significant increase in the city’s population and activity.

Cabot also faced a major challenge in 1976, when a tornado moved through the city and caused widespread destruction. The community responded by rebuilding, and the experience eventually became part of the city’s identity.

The annual CabotFest was established following the tornado. The event serves as a way to remember the city’s recovery while also celebrating the community. Residents and visitors continue to take part in CabotFest today.

The “Capital for a Day” program is designed to bring state government closer to communities throughout Arkansas. Rather than limiting the program to the state capital, senior officials travel to selected cities and meet with their local counterparts.

Cabot’s selection gives local officials and residents an opportunity to interact with members of the state government while also putting the community in the spotlight.

“NOW, THEREFORE, I, SARAH HUCKABEE SANDERS, Governor of the State of Arkansas, by virtue of the authority vested in me by the laws of the State of Arkansas, do hereby name Cabot, Arkansas, our Capital for a Day on September 30, 2026, and invite our senior state government officials to join me in a visit to the city.”

The governor signed the proclamation on September 28, 2026, with the Great Seal of the State of Arkansas affixed to the document.

On September 30, Cabot will therefore take on its temporary role as Arkansas’ seat of government, continuing the statewide program that has brought state officials to communities across Arkansas.
