Ballet Arkansas announces free season closing performance at the new North Little Rock Events Center in May

North Little Rock, Arkansas – Ballet Arkansas is shaking things up for its season finale this year, announcing a free performance of “Origins” at the soon-to-open North Little Rock Events Center. The two-night event, scheduled for May 1 and 3, represents a departure from the company’s traditional end-of-season format and promises audiences an entirely fresh experience.

The new venue, still under construction with a planned March opening, offers a larger and more flexible space than Ballet Arkansas’ usual Main Street home in Little Rock. Michael Fothergill, Executive and Artistic Director of Ballet Arkansas, explained that the move inspired the company to rethink its approach. “When we looked at the scale and flexibility of the North Little Rock Event Center, it felt like an invitation to think differently,” he said. “Rather than revisiting existing repertory, we wanted to lead with something fresh—new voices, new movement, and new ideas—while also removing barriers for audiences by making the concert free.”

Unlike previous season finales, which typically showcase a selection of the company’s best repertory, “Origins” will present world-premiere works created by Ballet Arkansas’ own company artists. Choreographers Deanna Stanton, Murray McCormack, McKenna Ulbrick, Liev Ewart, and Kerridwyn Schanck will bring new pieces to the stage, highlighting the depth and creativity of the company’s talent. Audiences can expect innovative movement, dynamic choreography, and a chance to witness Arkansas dancers and choreographers breaking new ground.

The performances will be open to the public at no cost, a decision Ballet Arkansas says is intended to make the arts more accessible. “Removing barriers for audiences” is part of a broader effort to invite the community into the world of ballet without the traditional ticketing restrictions, giving more people a chance to experience live dance in an exciting new space.

Following the May 3 performance, Ballet Arkansas will host a ticketed season-closing reception, giving patrons the opportunity to mingle with the company’s dancers and choreographers. The reception is expected to offer behind-the-scenes insights into the making of “Origins” and provide a celebratory conclusion to the 2025–26 season.

The move to the North Little Rock Events Center and the choice to debut entirely new works signals a new era for Ballet Arkansas, reflecting both the organization’s creativity and its commitment to reaching wider audiences. With its combination of free performances and world-premiere choreography, “Origins” promises to be a landmark event for the local arts community.
