Newport, Arkansas – Arkansas State University-Newport has reached a new milestone in academic quality and student opportunity after earning initial accreditation for its Concurrent Enrollment Program through the National Alliance of Concurrent Enrollment Partnerships (NACEP), placing the institution among a select group of programs recognized nationwide.

The accreditation makes ASU-Newport one of only 136 concurrent enrollment programs in the United States to achieve this distinction, and one of just 10 institutions to receive initial accreditation during the 2025–26 review cycle. The recognition highlights the university’s efforts to expand college access for high school students across Northeast Arkansas while maintaining rigorous academic standards.

NACEP accreditation is considered the only national accreditation specifically designed for concurrent enrollment programs. These programs allow high school students to take college-level courses and earn transferable credit while still completing their secondary education. To earn accreditation, programs must meet strict national standards that evaluate faculty qualifications, curriculum alignment, student support services, assessment practices, and overall program effectiveness.

ASU-Newport’s accreditation followed a detailed and comprehensive review process that included a self-study and peer evaluation. During this process, the institution was measured against NACEP’s 16 standards, which are designed to ensure quality, consistency, and accountability in concurrent enrollment programs. The accreditation is valid for five years and reflects the university’s long-term commitment to maintaining high academic standards for participating students.

“This accreditation validates the outstanding work our faculty, staff, and school district partners do every day to ensure students have access to rigorous, college-level coursework while still in high school,” said Ike Wheeler, interim chancellor of ASU-Newport. “Concurrent enrollment creates powerful opportunities for students to accelerate their educational goals, save money on college costs, and build confidence in their ability to succeed at the college level. We are proud to receive this national recognition and remain committed to providing exceptional experiences for the students and communities we serve.”

University officials say the program plays an important role in shaping early academic and career pathways for high school students. Through concurrent enrollment, students can earn college credits that are transferable to many institutions, giving them a head start on higher education. The program also allows students to explore potential career interests and work toward certificates or degrees before graduating from high school.

ASU-Newport currently partners with numerous school districts across Northeast Arkansas, expanding access to college-level coursework for students who may not otherwise have such opportunities. These partnerships are seen as a key part of the program’s success, helping bridge the gap between high school and college education while promoting academic readiness.

According to NACEP, accredited programs represent institutions that demonstrate strong commitment to quality assurance, transparency, and continuous improvement. Accreditation also ensures consistency in how courses are taught, how student performance is evaluated, and how faculty members are supported in delivering college-level instruction in high school settings.

ASU-Newport was recognized alongside institutions from across the country during the 2025–26 accreditation cycle. The National Alliance of Concurrent Enrollment Partnerships will formally celebrate newly accredited and reaccredited programs at its 2026 National Conference, which will be held in Cleveland, Ohio.

For ASU-Newport, the recognition adds to its growing reputation as an institution focused on accessibility and student advancement. Officials say the accreditation not only validates current efforts but also sets a foundation for continued growth and improvement in the years ahead.
