Batesville, Arkansas – The Arkansas State Police (ASP) Criminal Investigation Division is investigating a deadly shooting that occurred in Independence County involving a member of the Arkansas Department of Corrections K-9 team. The incident unfolded early Tuesday morning, drawing law enforcement to a home on Brown Lane in Batesville.
According to reports, deputies with the Independence County Sheriff’s Office (ICSO) responded to a shooting call at approximately 3:15 a.m. Upon arriving, they found two individuals who had been shot. One of the victims was pronounced dead at the scene, while the second was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment.
Authorities identified the suspect as 48-year-old Christopher Lee Johnston, who reportedly fled the scene following the initial shooting. Law enforcement conducted a search in the surrounding area, and on March 24, Johnston was located in a wooded field near the original crime scene. It was there that the Arkansas Department of Corrections K-9 team confronted him. During the encounter, officials say “deadly force” was used, and Johnston was pronounced dead at the scene.
Johnston’s body has since been sent to the Arkansas State Crime Lab, where forensic experts are working to determine the exact cause of death. Investigators will examine all evidence, including any reports from the K-9 team and law enforcement officers who were present, to provide a clear account of the events leading to his death.
“Special agents with the ASP CID must present their findings to the prosecuting attorney in Independence County to make a determination on whether or not the use of deadly force was consistent with the law in Arkansas,” officials stated. This review will consider state law regarding the use of deadly force by law enforcement and corrections personnel, including the circumstances that justified the confrontation.
The investigation is ongoing, and local authorities have urged the public to avoid speculation as officers work to piece together the sequence of events. The ASP emphasized that their role is to conduct a thorough, impartial review of the shooting to ensure accountability and transparency in the case.
This tragic incident highlights the risks faced by law enforcement officers and corrections personnel in the line of duty, particularly when confronting suspects who are considered armed or dangerous. It also underscores the careful procedural steps required under Arkansas law when evaluating the use of deadly force by officers in the field.

The ASP Criminal Investigation Division has confirmed that all findings from the inquiry will be submitted to the Independence County prosecuting attorney once completed, ensuring that the case is thoroughly evaluated under state law and proper legal standards.
