Arkansas Game Wardens issue boating safety reminders after severe fire highlights the dangers of improper fuel handling

Little Rock, Arkansas – Arkansas Game Wardens are reminding boaters across the state to take extra precautions when fueling their vessels after responding to a severe boat fire. While everyone involved in the incident was reported safe, officials said the situation serves as an important warning about how quickly a routine day on the water can become dangerous.

The Game Wardens said proper fuel handling is one of the most important steps boat owners can take to prevent fires and protect passengers. Gasoline vapors can collect in enclosed areas of a boat, especially in the bilge, creating a serious risk if they come into contact with a spark or ignition source.

Officials are encouraging boaters to follow several basic safety steps whenever they refuel.

One of the most important reminders involves ventilation. Boats equipped with power ventilation systems should have those systems running for at least four minutes after fueling and before starting the engine. This helps remove gasoline vapors that may have accumulated inside the bilge.

Boaters are also advised to prevent static sparks while filling their tanks. Keeping the fuel pump nozzle in contact with the tank opening during fueling can reduce the chance of static electricity creating an ignition source.

Another key safety measure is preventing fuel spills. Officials recommend avoiding any fuel entering the boat’s bilge or spilling into the water. If a spill does happen, it should be cleaned immediately before starting the engine or continuing with activities on the boat.

Boat owners should also avoid overfilling their fuel tanks. Leaving space inside the tank allows gasoline to expand safely as temperatures change. Filling a tank completely to the top can create additional problems and increase the possibility of spills.

Arkansas Game Wardens emphasized that gasoline vapors can be especially dangerous because they may collect in hidden areas of a boat. Even a small spark can ignite those vapors and lead to a fast-moving fire or explosion.

The recent emergency response highlights why boaters should remain alert even during simple tasks such as fueling. Officials say a few extra moments spent checking equipment, cleaning spills and allowing ventilation systems to work properly can make a major difference.

As boating season continues, the Game Wardens are encouraging everyone spending time on Arkansas waterways to make safety a priority. Careful fueling habits, regular equipment checks and awareness of potential hazards can help prevent accidents and ensure that time on the water remains enjoyable.

Officials said the goal of the reminder is not only to respond to emergencies but also to help prevent them before they happen. By following basic safety practices, boaters can reduce risks and better protect themselves, their families and others sharing Arkansas lakes and rivers.
