Arkansas drivers see gas prices drop by 31 cents just in time for busy Memorial Day weekend travel

Little Rock, Arkansas – As Memorial Day weekend nears, Arkansas drivers are getting a much-needed break on fuel prices, with averages across the state dipping significantly compared to this time last year. For families planning road trips, cookouts, or lake outings, this price drop could not have come at a better time.

According to AAA, the average price for a gallon of regular gasoline in Arkansas is now $2.80. That’s 31 cents less than what Arkansans were paying at the pump a year ago, and two cents cheaper than just a week ago. The downward trend is being felt statewide, offering some relief from months of fluctuating fuel costs.

Central Arkansas motorists are paying slightly less than the state average, with the Little Rock – North Little Rock metro area averaging $2.78 per gallon. In Pine Bluff, drivers are seeing prices around $2.76, while Hot Springs edges even lower at $2.74. Hot Spring County currently boasts the cheapest gas in the state at $2.68 a gallon. On the other end of the spectrum, Bradley County holds the highest average at $3.17.

Compared to the rest of the country, Arkansas is doing fairly well. The national average is sitting at $3.20 per gallon, with California far above the rest at $4.87. Mississippi holds the lowest national average at $2.67—just a penny below Arkansas’ cheapest.

“Gas prices haven’t been this low over Memorial Day since 2021 when the national average was $3.04,” AAA spokesperson Nick Chabarria said. “This will be welcome news for the expected record 39.4 million Americans who will take road trips over the long weekend.”

Behind the drop in gas prices is a mix of strong fuel supply and falling crude oil prices. AAA notes that gasoline production is currently up to 9.6 million barrels per day. Meanwhile, crude oil has slipped 41 cents, with prices now hovering around $61.57 per barrel. Those factors together have helped keep pump prices in check ahead of one of the busiest travel weekends of the year.

For Arkansans looking to take advantage of the lower fuel prices, the timing couldn’t be better. Memorial Day weekend often marks the start of summer travel season, and the extra money saved on gas may allow for longer trips or more fun along the way.

While prices can change quickly, AAA’s current outlook is optimistic, especially if supply remains steady and crude oil remains at manageable levels. For now, drivers in Arkansas can enjoy the open roads without quite as much worry about what it will cost to fill the tank.
