Arkansas Brighter Future 529 education saving plan surpasses 1.5 billion dollars in total assets

Little Rock, Arkansas – The Arkansas Brighter Future 529 Plan has reached a significant milestone, surpassing $1.5 billion in assets, state officials announced Thursday. The announcement underscores the growing popularity of the state’s tax-advantaged savings program, designed to help students and families plan for higher education costs.

The 529 Plan, also known as the Arkansas Brighter Future Plan, provides Arkansans with a flexible way to save for educational expenses. Funds in the plan can be used for tuition, books, housing, and other qualified costs at two- and four-year colleges or universities, both in the United States and abroad. The plan also supports trade and technical school programs, and even allows account holders to use savings to repay student loans. Earnings on contributions grow tax-deferred, and withdrawals used for qualified educational expenses are tax-free.

“Reaching $1.5 billion in assets is a remarkable milestone that highlights the commitment of Arkansas families to invest in education,” said Treasurer John Thurston. The growth of the program reflects a steady increase in participation and contributions, demonstrating the value of planning early for post-secondary education.

Currently, the Arkansas Brighter Future 529 Plan includes 54,695 individual accounts, more than half of which belong to Arkansas residents. Since its launch in 1999, the program has evolved to meet the needs of families. In 2003, the plan became the responsibility of the Treasurer’s Office, giving the state greater oversight. Initially a direct-sold program, it expanded in 2007 to allow financial advisors to offer the plan, broadening access for families seeking professional guidance in saving for college.

The Brighter Future 529 Plan has been praised for its flexibility and wide range of eligible educational institutions, including both traditional universities and vocational programs. This approach helps families tailor their savings strategy to fit the unique goals of each student.

Officials encouraged Arkansas residents to consider opening an account to take advantage of the tax benefits and long-term growth potential. “The plan is a powerful tool to help students achieve their educational dreams, while also providing families with financial peace of mind,” state officials said.

As more Arkansans embrace the program, the Brighter Future 529 Plan is expected to continue growing, helping thousands of students prepare for college and career success.
