Little Rock, Arkansas – The Arkansas Activities Association (AAA) has approved new policies aimed at addressing fighting during high school sporting events, introducing stronger penalties for athletes involved in altercations and creating a carryover rule that will affect seniors who are ejected during their final competition of a sport.
The changes were approved Monday, July 27, during the AAA’s annual meeting at the Statehouse Convention Center in Little Rock. The governing body reviewed and voted on several proposals designed to improve sportsmanship and reduce incidents of fighting at athletic events across Arkansas.
Among the approved measures were Proposal 8 and Proposal 9, two policies specifically focused on ejection consequences. The proposals were among 13 total items submitted by activity districts and the AAA Board of Directors.
Proposal 8, known as the Ejection Policy, passed by a vote of 236-39. The updated policy increases the penalties for athletes who are removed from games because of fighting.
Under the new rule, an athlete receiving their first ejection for fighting will be suspended from the next two comparable events or eight consecutive football quarters. A second fighting ejection will result in a suspension from the next four comparable events or 16 consecutive football quarters.
The AAA said the new penalties represent a doubling of the previous punishment for fighting-related ejections.
The updated policy states, “If ejected for fighting for the first time – the next two comparable events or 8 consecutive football quarters. If ejected for fighting for the second time – the next four comparable events or 16 consecutive football quarters. This would double the previous penalty.”
Proposal 9, another Ejection Policy update, was also approved by the board. The measure passed with a vote of 254-7 and focuses specifically on senior athletes who are ejected during their final event of a season.
The new rule prevents athletes from avoiding consequences simply because their current sport has ended. If a senior is removed from their final event of a sport because of fighting, the penalty will carry over into the next sport they participate in during the same school year.
The policy states, “Seniors who are ejected for fighting in their last event of a sport will serve their ejection penalty in the next sport participated in during the school year.”
AAA officials said the changes are intended to create stronger accountability for athletes and discourage behavior that can negatively impact players, teams, schools, and fans.
The policy updates come about four months after a major incident during the 2A Boys State Tournament semifinal game in Poyen. A brawl during the game resulted in 12 players being ejected, drawing attention to concerns about fighting and sportsmanship at Arkansas high school athletic events.
Following that incident, discussions continued among AAA leaders, school officials, and athletic representatives about ways to strengthen rules and ensure appropriate consequences for players involved in physical confrontations.
The newly approved policies will now provide a clearer framework for handling fighting incidents and establishing longer suspensions for repeat offenders. By increasing penalties and ensuring seniors cannot avoid punishment at the end of a season, AAA officials hope the changes will encourage athletes to maintain proper conduct throughout their high school sports careers.
