Little Rock, Arkansas – As election season approaches, the Arkansas Department of Transportation (ARDOT) is issuing a reminder to political candidates and their supporters that placing campaign signs on highway right of ways is against state law. Officials emphasized that these regulations exist to protect both drivers and road workers while maintaining clear and safe roadways across Arkansas.
State law permits only official highway signage on state-owned property. This includes directional signs, informational notices, and regulatory markers. Any other signs, including political campaign signs, are considered unauthorized. ARDOT Area Maintenance Offices across the state routinely monitor highways and remove any signs that violate these rules.
“It is important to keep highway right of ways clear for the safety of both drivers and road workers,” said ARDOT Director Jared Wiley. The department stresses that signs along roadways can be dangerous distractions, and improperly placed signage can obstruct sight lines, potentially leading to accidents.
According to ARDOT, yard signs found on the right of way are promptly removed by personnel. For larger billboard-style signs, the department contacts the owners directly and requests their removal. Those whose signs are taken down can retrieve them during normal business hours at the nearest ARDOT Area Maintenance Office. This process ensures that political expression is balanced with public safety on state highways.
ARDOT encourages candidates to display campaign materials on private property or in locations approved by local jurisdictions to avoid fines or removal. The department also reminds the public that the highway right of way is reserved for transportation-related purposes, and maintaining these areas free of unauthorized signage is part of a broader effort to keep Arkansas roadways safe and visually clear for all drivers.

With election season approaching, ARDOT officials urge campaign teams to plan carefully and comply with state regulations. The department’s ongoing efforts to enforce signage laws highlight a commitment to safety and order on the state’s highways, preventing hazards and keeping the roads navigable for all.
