El Dorado, Arkansas – El Dorado will temporarily serve as Arkansas’ seat of government on October 15, 2026, under Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders’ “Capital for a Day” program. The designation makes the Union County community the 26th city selected during her administration.
Sanders signed the proclamation on October 12, inviting senior state government officials to accompany her to El Dorado. The program brings state leaders into communities across Arkansas to meet with their local counterparts while highlighting the cities they visit.
The proclamation traces El Dorado’s development from a farming community to a center of energy activity in South Arkansas. Matthew Rainey founded the town and established it as the Union County seat in 1843. It was later incorporated on May 5, 1870.

Railroad connections helped broaden the local economy in the late 1800s, opening opportunities for industries such as lumber. But it was the completion of the Busey No. 1 oil well in January 1921 that marked a major turning point in the city’s history.
By 1923, dozens of oil companies had established a presence in El Dorado, bringing substantial growth to the area. That legacy remains part of the city’s identity, with the proclamation recognizing its continuing role as a South Arkansas energy hub.
The designation also draws attention to El Dorado’s cultural attractions and community events. Among the destinations highlighted are the Murphy Arts District, South Arkansas Arboretum, Oil Heritage Park, and historic Rialto Theater.

Local celebrations offer activities throughout the year. The annual Mayhaw Festival includes jelly making classes, while MusicFest features country and rock concerts. The SouthArk Outdoor Expo offers wood carving demonstrations, and Shamrockin’ on the Square includes a pet parade during St. Patrick’s Day festivities.
Those events and landmarks feature alongside the city’s industrial history in the governor’s recognition. Together, they outline the community that state officials have been invited to visit for the October 15 designation.
The visit will provide an opportunity for senior state officials and local leaders to meet through the Capital for a Day program. The full designation is available in the governor’s proclamation announcing El Dorado as Arkansas’ Capital for a Day.
